Space Force

Well, whad’ya know! The US will apparently get a Space Force! I’m not one to judge, especially since it’s not my tax money at stake here. It’s not as if the arms race hadn’t reached space a long time ago, so I guess it’s probably just an administrative consolidation of various already existing programs. But hey! I’m not an expert. Since we happen to have readers in the most interesting places, maybe someone has more details he or she can share with us?

One thing I will do exactly like Chuck is to go see “Solo” with a friend tomorrow. It’s the first time I go to the movies since my wife and I went to see “Gravity” five years ago, before our first son was born. Really looking forward to that! I managed to avoid all spoilers so far, so please don’t write any in the comments underneath. At least until Thursday. Thanks!

I saw a really good description of this proposed “Space Force” using still-frames from various movies..
“What we want it to be” – Star Trek, Jean-Luc Picard and crew on the bridge looking wise.
“What we fear it will be” – Star Wars, Captain Phasma and stormtroopers looking intimidating.
“What it probably will be” – Spaceballs, Dark Helmet looking like a moron.

The best one in this context is definitely the « republican space rangers », a series of cartoons you can watch on TV inside the video game universe of GTA IV and GTA V….

Is the recruitment open only to US citizens with valid US passport or do they accept aliens (not from this World)?

@ Quill: My guess is that it’ll be relegated mainly to monitoring space junk (all those dead satellites and fragments of same that have accumulated in Earth orbit over the decades) and (maybe, if the U.S. Air Force is unable to keep it from getting wrenched out of it’s jurisdiction) U.S. satellite cyber-security. Otherwise? Yeah, Spaceballs
