Cloud backup on Foreflight
I might have mentioned this before, but Foreflight is the best App ever for anyone who is flying either professionally or privately. I am saying this not because we get paid by them (I wish we would, Chuck always uses Foreflight) but as a very satisfied user of the app. I bought my iPad specifically (more free product placement) for this App and by now I wouldn’t know what to do without either one of them. Nor do I remember a world where had to do everything by hand, carry and update many charts, then call Flight Service from a payphone at the airport. Of course, in typical Chuck fashion, it didn’t take me long to fill up the remaining free space with rather useless apps and games not shortly after…
But I must warn you, Foreflight does not let you move clouds. Chuck might have misunderstood that particular feature. Imagine every pilot out there randomly moving the clouds to wherever he needs them and the next guy moving them right back for his flight?
Maybe that is exactly why Foreflight doesn’t have that feature …
I hear all sorts of great things about Foreflight. The big drawback is that it’s only for iOS, and I won’t go down that route.
I use SkyDaemon on Android, and while I have no direct comparison to Foreflight, and cannot say anything about IFR, it is quite nice for VFR. Moving map, Airspace, all the charts, etc.
I assume this was about as effective as aiming a TV remote at a barking dog, or my mom when she’s nagging me, and pressing ‘mute.’ What I’ve found works better is to go into the “weather” settings and setting the theme to “clear sk … oh wait that only works in Flight Simulator. So does pausing when you need a chance to think.
Another happy user of Skydemon on Android, here. As I hear on European forums, Foreflight is good stuff, but many are wary about the intentions of new owner BigB – who appears to also be the owner of Garmin.
I once set out to concoct my own bit of software in this corner, but obviously I was neither clever nor quick enough.
Heh, knuckle dragger…believe is cloth coverings etc. I check noaa, sacrifice some coffee beans and consult the sock. If sock not sticking straight or doing the herky jerky…I just go. 😉 Mind, I stick to models. Full size doesn’t worry (much) about lightning. I uh, I kind of worry…when flying control line.

another Android App I have is VFRnav, which is a bit cheaper (it was only EUR 15 when I bought it, but is now EUR 50 per year, I think), and a lot faster, and I personally find the maps a bit clearer and easier to read. But it has none of the advanced features of SkyDemon, such as automatic geo-referenced approach charts, weather, etc. And although not superfast, it still works ok on my ancient GalaxyTab 2 7.0 (almost 7 years old!), running LineageOS.
