Cliff notes:

Instructor and student on mountain fliying lesson and crash in the mountains.  Instructor sets off his personal PLB (most likely one of the new 400 mhz models) and hikes down the valley trying to find a sign of civilization, finds a cabin and eventually is able to attract a rescue helicopter with a fire.

In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I stand my ground, and I won't back down"

Very true PiperGirl---
And, survival gear can be as little as appropriate clothing for the terrain being flown over----------for instance, when departing on a hot summer day, having a sweater or jacket on board in case you might have to walk out of the mountains that you're going to fly over--- |:)\

Good point, Airtac...   |:)\

My 4th hour of flight was an engine failure, in January, in Montana...  the CFI did a perfect job of landing in a horse pasture with about 14" of fluffy, dry snow.  The humorous part was, we had just had the SAME conversation as before the other 3 lessons, in which he vehemently told me to NOT show up wearing so "damned many clothes"..  he felt I couldn't feel the rudders okay with heavy winter boots on.

But -- since at the time I owned a LOVELY, 1951 Willys with NO heater, (and NO anything else, for that matter), and had to lean out the open window all winter long to make hand signals for turning, I always had on ALL my winter clothes, and I wasn't about to freeze to death on my way to the airport (though it was pretty darned cold anyway!).....

So, as we sat there in the brilliant winter sunshine, and STARK silence, and watched the farmer's pickup truck slowly making its way out to where we were parked in his field, I turned to him (he of the low-cut sneakers, blue jeans and nylon windbreaker...  no hat...  no gloves...) and grinned and said, "So...  do you want ME to go talk to him?"

He had a great sense of humor, and we laughed like hell, but he NEVER did scold me for what I wore after that....  and yes, he got completely frozen and filled his sneakers up with snow, walking over to the farmer with a miserable look on his face.   :D
Don't make me come back there!!!!

Heh, heh...  not to mention, the CFI took off alone after getting the engine restarted, so there I was...  stuck...  left behind.  The farmer and his wife were super nice...  we warmed up in their kitchen while the instructor called the FBO on their phone...  but after he left, the farmer said "Well, I gotta get back to work" and since I had nothing to do while they sent a bigger airplane down to pick me up (yes, he landed in the same fluffy snow to get me), I offered to help him do whatever he was doing before we so rudely interrupted him, so...........

My "flight lesson" ended up in helping him build sheep pens in his barn..  holding the boards while he nailed away..  and I was STILL thankful for my warm clothes, mittens and good boots!  HA HA!!!!!

I guess this could go under the category of "TIME TO SPARE...   GO BY AIR........"   ::rofl::    ::rofl::
Don't make me come back there!!!!
