Home base database for FAA
« on: February 08, 2007, 06:25:36 PM »
Anyone else heard about this yet?  We've been asked to list all of the aircraft based here and send it to a company called GCR, which has been contracted by the FAA to compile a database of based aircraft.

Never heard about that . . . ::thinking::

When you say "we" what do you mean?
Your company? or are you on some sort of an airport comittee?

They wouldn't just ask local pilots wandering about at an airport, would they?

Well, they're asking airport managers to gather this info (tail numbers, addresses, etc.).  I work for the airport manager's FBO.  The line is sort of blurry.

I sure haven't heard of anything like this --- the only aircraft database I am familiar with is the FAA's own registry, where you can check out an "N" number, etc.

You've got me curious now!   :D

Make sure it's on the up and up and not some sort of scam or other way to get personal information illegally...

That was my concern at first, but MnDOT actually talked to my boss about it.  It's supposedly legit, but I'm not sure why it's required.  The faq on www.gcr1.com/5010ba says the FAA is required to assemble this database, but it doesn't say why it's required.   ::loony::

Still sounds fishy to me.

Notice when they answer the "are we required to give you the information"  they don't actually *answer* their own FAQ question.   They just say "well, the FAA is required to obtain this information."

I'd look for something on an official FAA website.

Sounds to me that you aren't required to answer them, but they don't want to do any survey work themselves.   I'd also look more into the purposes etc.    I didn't see an explanation of a "requirement" to furnish information or even for the FAA to do it.  Instead it seemed like the company is trying to entice airports by saying "if you have more based aircraft maybe you'll get more money."     Money ends up many times determined by number of operations, not based aircraft.   I still think this sounds off and they aren't telling you everything...      I wouldn't want the airport giving out my information only know what they've said on that page.
