P.S. Nice tractor too, Peterbilt 379?

You certainly know your trucks, Frank. salute  Yes, my last full time trucking job was driving this 1999 Peterbuilt model 379.  It was a simple machine, with a 500HP Detroit Diesel engine and a 10 speed Rockwell transmission.  I forget the gear ratio on the rear axles, but it doesn't matter.  Old 1672 would top out around 106-110mph, but I mostly kept it under 80 because the trailers I pulled all had recap tires... which tended to overheat and explode if you pulled them any faster!
Yeah Frank, I'm impressed too--- salute
Hey Rooster, was that Detroit one of the new 4 stroke inlines or was it an 8V-92.
I got a lot of miles behind the 92s but haven't (and won't--I'm retired) driven the new ones--understand they drive like a Cat motor.

I used to own one o' these... and a cabover Freightshaker... both were a bit underpowered (11 liter Detroit), but the Peterwagon got great fuel mileage.

It's a warm, summery evening in Boise...  a perfect start to the National Smokejumper Reunion being held this weekend.  Old and young jumpers alike were treated to a demonstration jump earlier today, by 4 Bureau of Land Management smokejumpers and 4 Forest Service smokejumpers, aboard a contract Twin Otter.

Hope you don't mind a few pictures....  as they suited up, and loaded up on the airplane.

Cheers!  S'Mom   Smiley

Some of us decided to have a fly-in picknic breakfast this morning in Alaskan Range.  The location was Caribou Strip.  An old ridge top mining strip about 50 miles south of Fairbanks.  Since Tundra Toy isn't much of bush plane, I flew to the nearby Goldking Strip, an old airforce strip still regularly used by miners and hunters.  And was then ferried over to Caribou in the Interstate Arctic Tern.  Anyway, here's the pictures:

Looking down at the Caribou runway for the South:

The Tern and Champ near the North end of Caribou:

The Tern Airborn on the way there:

Your's truely at Goldking with the Tundra Toy:

Looking up the runway to the South at Carribou, yes there's a definite slope to it.:

You need to get that training wheel off the front of the toy and get the mains moved a bit forward.... Then she'll be better in the bush

I was "Chatting" to Frank a while ago, and told him about a one off chance I had in 1987 to get a flight in a SAAB 91C Safir. Well Frank after re-unpacking our house  Loony after all the renovations we just did, I was going through my photos and found these 2 jems from that day....still searching for the in flight shots.

P.S: These where taken at Redcliffe Airfeild where I'm now training (eeek 20 years later  Eek! ) and the 172N on the far right hand side of the photo is the first plane I ever got to fly in.

Exactly how would that make it a better bush plane?

Well you're welcome to join us any time.  The strip we were using is an old abandon C-130 Herk strip.  We're already planning a brushing party for later this year, but after walking it on the ground I'll go ahead and bring my 150 in there next time.

Gibbo, could you tell us a bit about the Saab?  I'm not at all familiar with that one.  Heck, I didnt' know they made any aircraft other than military jets.
