AVIATION ABBREVIATION CONTEST !
« on: November 26, 2005, 06:22:14 PM »
Welcome to the aviation abbreviation contest!
The first one of it's kind put on my the makers of the first comic of it's kind. . .
I am gonna skip a long intro, let's get to the fun right away:

Here are the rules:

The abbreviations have to be aviation terms. You get extra kudos for using other common abbreviations but the ones that count are the aviation ones.

It should be one or maybe two sentences to keep the volume down. But originality does count as well, so don’t let that stop you!

The sentence has to make somewhat sense. No random cluttering of all the abbreviations you heard before.

The winner can pick a free book or whichever t-shirt he or she likes. When we announce the winner we’ll get in contact with him or her and find out sizes and stuff per email (no personal addresses over the forum).

AND if we end up using it in a strip, we'll double the prize!

Here is my sample I came up with late at night:

"The CSR at the FBO overheard the POI from the FAA ask the A&P about the PIC who squawked the HSI and DME go T/U while on the ILS into OXR under IFR just before reaching his DA"

Do you think you can beat me?

And now enjoy and be inventive!!!

The CAP PIC flew over the HNL NDB to visit the FAA FSDO to take his test on the FAR/AIM so he could fly IFR

It was CAVU when I departed MTJ for a short hop to TEX.  However, once I got over the ETL VOR it became appearant that it was going to be either MVFR or IFR to the destination.  I contected DEN ARTCC and requested the VOR/DME GPS A approach.  I was given a squak code and told to hold over the ETL VOR as published at FL160 and EFC at 15 past the hour.  Just before the EFC expired I was cleared for the approach.  After decending in the hold I turned inbound for the IAP and slowed to Vref +10.  Over the IAP (ETL VOR) I selected Appch flaps and LG down.. three green and good to go.. and announced my posistion on the CTAF.  I decended to the DH, and then flew on to the MAP... not seeing the airport I flew the MA procedure and returned to the hold at ETL VOR.   Not wanting to shoot another approach I requested a return to MTJ and was cleared as requested.  Soon after leaving the ETL VOR, I was again VFR and so cancelled IFR and said gooday to the DEN controllers.

(true story)
yesterday while IBND to T41 from BPT and LCA areas working HEL radio relay I was WBND in MVFR with MOD to SVR TURB BLO FL060 and since T41 doesn't have ASOS i had to use the KEFD ATIS. and to avoid the CBAS above T41 for HOU I flew at FL015 when i entered the traffic pattern my cell phone rang and it was my G/F wanting my ETA to the house after all it was her B/D yesterday. I told her to STBY because my ASI, AI, ALT, TC, DG and VSI were going nuts due to all the TURB. landing on runway 12 with a 60 degree CW from the right (wnd 160 @ 20G30kts with WS alerts too in a PA-28) i carried extra A/S to compensate for the strong CW. right wing down and left rudder. it's a sick feeling when you run out of rudder but i did land on RWY CNTRLN! anyway i squeaked the LNDG and rolled down the TWY to park.
The three best things in life are a good landing, a good orgasm, and a good bowel movement. The night carrier landing is one of the few opportunities in life to experience all three at the same time. - Unknown

In one sentence:

Having JAR-OPS, JAR-FCL and the company’s FOM in mind the MD,FSO and TD questioned the Cpt. and the Co-Pil. if there was a problem with the A/C EFIS or the FDC on the last flight under IMC conditions, because the survey of GPS and CVR data showed that the PIC had a different NAV aid (ADF) selected on his HUD than the Co-Pil. had on his HSI (VOR) whilst the FD was pre-selected with 500 ft/min VS rate for the ILS approach
If helicopter flying would be difficult, engineers would do it.

It not funny but here you go.....

A Pilot has to keep many thing in his mind as he make an Instrument approach. An IFR approach is normally flown at an ISA of 1.3xVso, which is close to Va you might notice, you cross the OM at or just above the MCA, that will line you up with the GS, normally this will give you a 200fps descent, you fly the ILS till you see the RAIL, or DH which ever comes first, DH is listed in MSL but it is important to remember that it is really only 200 feet AGL, if you do not see the RAIL you need to apply power accelerate to Vx, climb to the MEA, turn back to the VORTAC or Initial Approach fix descend to MDA and hope for a routing that gives you a NOPT  back to the LOC to shoot a second approach.

AGL means above ground level.
DH means decision height.
FPS Foot Per Second
GS means glide slope.
IAS means indicated airspeed.
IFR means instrument flight rules.
ILS means instrument landing system.
LOC means ILS localizer.
MCA means minimum crossing altitude.
MDA means minimum descent altitude.
MEA means minimum en route IFR altitude.
MSL means mean sea level.
NOPT means no procedure turn required.
OM means ILS outer marker.
RAIL means runway alignment indicator light system.
TACAN means ultra-high frequency tactical air navigational aid.
VA means design maneuvering speed.
VS0 means the stalling speed or the minimum steady flight speed in the landing configuration.
VX means speed for best angle of climb.
VOR means very high frequency omnirange station.
VORTAC means collocated VOR and TACAN

Some sage advice;

When your MEL has you SOL for IFR and you're MVFR, don't take off or you'll be SOL for VFR in IMC and find your PPL in the hands of the FAA, or worse, the NTSB after C.A.P. comes looking for you from your ELT's hit via the COSPAS/SARSAT System and the USAFARCC!

If your PPL is VFR, then the ABV shouldn't be a factor because you should be hangar flying that day!
We're going to have to come in pretty low!  It's just one of those things you have to do... when you land!  -- Ted Striker - Airplane!

I asked my CFI how an HSI worked, he started to say something about the CDI and OBS and the instrument getting it's info from a Flux  Gate Compass... I gave him a confused look and he rephrased his answer... PFM

AND THE WINNER IS:
We went over the submissions several times and had to look back at what exactly the rules were on this one. Turns out, since the rules weren't all too clear we have two winners!
The winner for the most abbreviations in one sentence is "Roland"!
And the winner for the most abbreviations in two sentences is "Plthinjx"!
Rana is a close second but technically there were more than two sentences just pieced together.
Thanks for playing everybody! I had fun reading all the submissions. I am not sure if they all made sense to Stef but I will sit him down next time we meet and talk him through all of it, HA HA ;D
If we think of another fun contest we'll do this again sometime.

I've spent the last week trying to top Roland's submission... couldn't do it.  ;D ;D

Here's my attempt, even though the competition's over:

I only had my PPL, and my RPM and KIAS were rising so my Pax consulted my POH while I flew my VFR A/C in IFR Wx at my VNC's MOCA.  My DA20 neared its Vne but FSS and ATC heard my MAYDAY on the rdo and cleared the CYXU RWY which I could only see on my GPS because of the low SMs of vis.
