Flyboys (the movie)
« on: September 19, 2006, 10:00:55 AM »
The director of this movie is a pilot and from what I hear most of the folks involved are actual pilots.  This could actually be a realistic aviation movie, from what I'm reading, they want pilots to be able to watch the movie and *not* be able to pick out inconsistancies.

Company got and posted a letter from the folks who made the movie as well as a few posters, they didn't start advertising that I saw until just now and it apparently premiers this Friday.

It's also an independant film that MGM has picked up.

It seems that we won't have any "remove before flight" thingie attached to the flying plane then! :)
I give that landing a 9 . . . on the Richter scale.

From the trailers and previews so far, it looks like typical Hollywood BS as far as the flying goes, but that's okay by me (e.g, the scene where the good guy gets so entranced fixing his guns he flies straight and level for a couple of minutes in a dogfight and the bad guy ends up behind him... there's no way anyone even flying their first mission wouldn't know not to do that... similarly, these CGI planes have a lot more thrust to weight than their real life equivalents with their 65 HP or so engines... looks a lot better that way though). Top Gun in WWI should be a very entertaining formula, and I can't wait to see it. They screened a rough cut at Oshkosh... people who saw it said there was "too much flying in it." That was the rough cut though, and no doubt some final editing was done since then. I know where I'll be on Friday night or Saturday! I'm especially pleased that the producers went indy and decided to make a movie rather than a vehicle for a highly-overpriced celebrity (excuse me, "actor").

Just got my Sport Aviation magazine last night with the write ups on Oshkosh.  One of the photos is a picture of a Neiuport replica flying.  Caption said it was one of 4 made for the movie.  No doubt there's some CG in the movie, but there must be some actual aircraft in flight too.

From a writeup from the director on the website, he would've loved to have only used real aircraft, but had no way to get that many.  However, I'm sure having real aircraft helped a lot in the realism department...

As far as being fixated, that's far from an unheard of mistake.  The other one that's supposed to be easy to do is target fixation, where there's another bad guy around and he slips in behind you while you're concentrating on the first one...

Hey all, I'm just an enthusiast, and it's much easier for me to comment on movies than aviation, so thanks for the topic!

I saw this movie yesterday, it was really entertaining.  I can usually call out the computer generated shots when I see them, but the effects in this looked pretty good.  I read that at the premiere the filmmakers actually brought in one of the biplanes and put it on stage in the theater.  Anyway, hope you all check it out.  Is there really such as thing as too much flying in a movie?

I'm a duck, so I don't have thumbs, but if I did I'd give this a thumbs up. Think Top Gun in WWI and turn your brain off before the show starts and you'll enjoy it immensely!

And better go see it soon... it didn't do well this weekend... instead, the $11 million dollar to make Jackass 2 made $28 million. As one of the producers or whatever of that film said "What's wrong with this country?" I fear the profit ratio on that film means we're going to see lots of copies. Sigh. So go see Flyboys... several times!

Good recommendation!  It looks like it came in 4th at the box office this weekend, which isn't too bad, but the more people that check it out, the longer it stays in theaters.  I'm sure the huge number of aviation fans will help with that.  I might see it again just to try and off-set the Jackass numbers.  You all might like this, it's footage of the actors from Flyboys training in real aircraft...

I can't believe Jackass is a movie - it wasn't worth the time to watch as a television show!  :o

I need to go see "Flyboys" this weekend.

I saw "Flyboys" this past weekend. The movie itself was rather unremarkable in my opinion. But the flying scenes were awesome! Of course, I've always had a thing for WWI airplanes and air war stories.

I recommend anyone who likes aviation see it at least once. You'll have fun, guaranteed.

Hmm... nearly makes me wanna trade my 801 kit for something a little more aerobatic  8)

Good movie, though my favorite flying parts were the ones without combat (don't get me wrong, I enjoyed those too)
as I've always had this thing for peaceful countrysides viewed from the cockpit of an old biplane.

4th, not bad. I only wish Serenity had done so well *sigh*.

Zenith 801?  *drool*

I've been thinking about seeing if Rans had any Chaos or Sakota kits left....
The average pilot, despite the sometimes swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring. These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Check Trade-a-plane, I'll bet you could pick up a kit that'd hardly been started dirt cheap.
One of the things that sold me on the BH Patrol was the flight report describing it's behavior doing loops, rolls, spins and Cuban 8's.  That's about as wild as I want to get, but sounds really fun.  And I'm almost done with step 1 in the building...preparing the shop.  ;)  Maybe next month I'll actually buy a sheet of aluminum and start cutting.  :o

On the movie, I really want to see it soon.  Just saw "The Aviator" for the first time.  Good movie, but too much about him going crazy and not nearly enough about the planes.   Hey Bob, want to go see it in 2 weeks?  That's my next long weekend.
