Pilots looking for a job?
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:04:48 AM »
I just read that in China there is a huge shortage of airline pilots, because airline traffic is growing much faster than they can train new pilots! Shenzen Airlines just hired 40 Brazilian pilots for a salary of USD 8,000.00 a month. That's almost double of what they pay their regular pilots. Now I don't know exactly what the salary for airline captains in the US is, but that doesn't sound too bad, does it?

I read this in an Austrian newspaper, but I googled for it and here's an English article:

Not such a bad deal!  :o

I wonder if they hire less experienced pilots, like around 310hrs...?  ::)

Probobly not for transport category aircraft... but there are companies that do.

Yeah, I know it. Hopefully I'll soon hook up some work and put my new CFI rating to use.  ;D

I read somewhere that the Chinese have the switches backwards in their planes... i.e. we switch things on by moving the switch up or forward and they switch things on putting the switch down.

I am not sure if it's an urban myth but that would definetly mess me up the first couple of hundred hours.... :P

Yes it is, and that's me standing in front of it.  I've only been up here since April though.  I live in what I consider to be the Fairbanks "ghetto"  which is pretty darn tame for the "bad" part of town.  ;)

The Russians have always been bad about stuff like that.  Like having aircraft engines turn the opposite way.  ;)   Heck, they are *still* producing AN-2 Colts... those are the world's largest biplane!

Anyway, I've heard the original AN-2s had the attitude indicator by your knee with all instruments placed simply by wherever the installer felt like putting them that day.

Most switches here in NZ (not airplanes, just in general) work like that, and I've had to check myself sometimes using switches in aircraft.  :D

Well, if you don't mind lots of oil and round engines (the piston kind, not turbines), you might apply with Brooks here in Fairbanks.  There's a lot of pilots around here that got their start with them. ;)

Brooks flies the Carvair too!

I had less time than that when I started... my first two months I averaged 100 hours a month of flying...  company isn't hiring right now though so I can't help in that regard.  Brooks might be though...  Warbelos might be ready for another 1900 F/O in a little bit, they definately will be in spring when their 121 ticket comes through (they plan to get another 1900 at that time).
