Yesterday a fire at Mount Carmel, near the city of Haifa, had started.
40 people killed last night,36 of them were prison guards sent to help to vacate a prison in the middle of the Carmel,16 people are badly injured and 15,000 have been vacated from their house. A kibbutz with 100 families which have been vacated has burned to the ground, along with two other smaller settlements.
Last night the anti-fire materials for aircraft have ran out, and Israel is currently importing from nearby countries, Israel's fire fighting aircrafts consists of Ayres Thrusmasters used for cropdusting by a civilian company, and IAF's CH-53s with bambi buckets.
All of the north airports and airfields have been closed to civilian aircrafts and are now operating as bases to fire fighting aircrafts. Ramat David AFB has ceased almost completely it's military flights and became a base to fire fighting aircrafts from nearby countries, like Cyprus, Italy and Greek, but the one worth mentioning is Turkey, that almost the bad relationship with Israel, they sent two CL-145s. USA is also sending support.
I will be heading there in a couple of days to help the homeless and the people who vacated from their house.

Our aircraft are sitting in the hangar...but I doubt they will send us.

I have no idea as to whether they have wildfires over there on a frequent basis....do they know the tactics to "manage" them?

Right now it's not how to manage, it's more about with what, right now all of the firefighters in Israel is in the Carmel, it may sound a lot, but it's about 1500 fire fighters, and we only have fire trucks and crop dusters to fight fires, so when the fire is not near a road, it's really hard to fight it.
The Palestinian authority and Jordan sent firefighters to fill in for the Israeli firefighters, just in case that other place will start to burn.
After several fires today, it have become clear that all of the fires in the last two days was intentional, and the police is not ruling out the possibility of a terrorist unit starting fires.

More info here:

Basically, we do not put out fires----we "manage" them. What that means is we start backfires that are under our control.

Fire needs three things to burn---Fuel, Oxygen and Heat. You cannot put out a fire of that magnitude, what we would do is remove one of the three elements from its path---namely the fuel.

We would look at where the fire is progressing and start a new fire---which we control by utilizing a line to burn off. This way we burn out the fuel from the main fires path and when it arrives---guess what? NOTHING left to burn so it dies a natural cause.

This is what I mean by "manage". Often times, firefighters who are inexperienced in these huge fires tend to waste time and resources trying to go direct and put the fire out....trust me...you will NOT extinguish a tree that is engulfed in flame. Our military over here is guilty of trying just that---you need people who UNDERSTAND large fire management.

I see the Australians have offered their help also.

Well someone listened to what I put.....I have it on good authority that the Custer NIMO team has been mobilized and will be heading to Israel to manage the incident.

I worked with him on the Bugaboo Scrub fires in Northern Florida and Georgia back in early 07.

I'm glad, the local fire fighters aren't used to big fires.
Meanwhile we got an IL-76 from Russia, about 15 CL-145 and another 16 on the way from various countries.
The fire has burned until now 160,000 acres an about 4 million trees.

There will be thre 20 person crews leaving from Boise tomorrow (Sunday 5th), for Israel. They will be made up of people from the closest forest to Boise.

Heard a rumor the Evergreen 747 is on its way and supposedly 10 MAFF's---these may all be a waste...should send the Aero Union guys and some SEATs but that is my opinion.

Yeah, the Evergreen 747 has arrived and I think it started to work already, although the fire is under control and will probably end in the next two days, so I don't think it would be necessary to send more crews than what we have now.

I ready this morning about Evergreen's 747 performing over yonder.  Also read about the Palistinians helping out, but I didn't hear about Jordan.  Wow.

Hope they contain it quickly.

As much as I know it will be over by tomorrow's noon, but it's going to take years to fix the damage, a few villages have burnt almost completely, along with some 4,000,000 and who knows how much animals.
One of the tragedies in this fire is of a 16 year old that has volunteered to the fire fighters since last year, when he heard about the fire he ditched school and joined to a group of fire fighters that was going the rescue two cars and a bus stuck in the middle of the fire, the kid, among with a bus full of prison guards and a private car have burned alive.
