Volcanic shut down

No the Icelandic vulcano is not erupting again, was watching something on the BBC news about it  when flights where grounded.  The airlines are saying that the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) over reacted.  Just wondering what you all think about this (since most of you are experienced flyers/mechanics), was the decision correct to ground flights in the affected areas and close airspace? can modern jet turbines handle ingestion of volcanic ash?  my opinion is it was the correct desision to ground flights and close airspace it would of been a diffrent matter if a airliner had gone down or suffered damage due to the ash clouds.

Surely closing SOME airspace is reasonable, but I an not so sure about grounding the whole Europe....

Be it as it may, thing that pisses me more was the WAY it was done. I have my glider training on an airport that is right under the TMA of Pragues main airport. Usually, we coordinate our maximum altitude. This time, THE WHOLE TMA was marked TFR. CAVOK day, I could have done my stalls and spins, but no. We could not even do the regular stuff.... oh well.
