Chino Airshow update!
« on: May 21, 2006, 01:41:37 AM »

WOW!!!! and DAAAAAYUM!!  :o
If you guys ever get the chance to check out the airshow in Chino, I can really recommend it. Especially if you're into vintage WW1 and WW2 planes. They did this tribute where they flew 24(!) WW2 planes at the same time!
And I am not tlaking about Texans, or T34's or something small:
I didn't get to count them all but there were 2 B25's, a B-17, a Bearcat, a few P-51's, an F4-U1, F4-U4, P-38, Spitfire, Avenger, A-1, and more. It was AWESOME!! and what a sound ...
Plus I've never seen a P-38 fly in real life.
Good times, good times,...

I have seen quite a bit of airshows, but I am a vintage plane fan myself (yeah, A-10's and F-whatevers are cool, but still) and I reall like this one!
Can't wait to go back tomorrow...

It's my friend, the "promo-chick"!  ;)

Thanks to these pictures, there might be an article about us in an aviation magazine. She did an interview today....

Heh heh. . .
Am I a marketing genius, or what?!  ;D  ;D  ;D

Here is a picture of some of the planes just so you can get an idea how many there were.
All of them flew later on. I took the pictures early in the morning so they are not blocked by a bunch of people standing around....
(plus I get too carried away talking the whole time and space on taking pictures.... ;))

Last time I went to Reno, they had all the Super Gold airplanes out and lined up on the flight line, ready to start-up and taxi to the runway.  Everyone couldn't wait to hear all those big V12's and corncob radials rumble to life at the same time...

But instead, we got treated to the 2nd F14 demo of the day, and about the 8th one of the entire weekend.  I like afterburners as much as anyone else, but nothing beats the sound of a big piston engine rumbleing along on the ground...

I hear you man!
The afterburner gets kind of old to me after 2min because I get tired of keeping my ears shielded from the noise and all the car-alarms going off.... cool in the beginning... not so cool 5min in to it.....
Big piston engines just rule!!!  ;D

I agree with the piston engine theory.  I mean most jet engines are loud jet engines, but almost every piston engine engine has its own distinct sound.  Love the pics Mike,  wish I was there instead of in Panaca.  Looks like a lot of fun.
WOW I did that!

All I can say is that I keep getting reasons thrown in my face to get over to USA while my chances still continue to get proven non-existant. I do still appreciate the pictures :)

About jet vs. piston then I sum it up like this:
Piston-powered planes are nice both to watch and hear while jets are only nice to see. In cars I also prefer a deeper rolling sound instead of high-pitched F1-style engines, like a Subaru Boxer or Ford V-8 vs Honda VTEC, although I do think a S2000 and NSX might be nice to drive still, like a F-14 would be great to fly, the people on the ground just get more out of the piston sound.

This to me is why everyone still watches NASCAR and leaves the IRL hanging. People just like the the deep, throaty growling of raw power rather than the refined, whiny engines we have now.

My God Chuckar, you're in Panaca!   MMMM-BOY, now that sounds like a party.   When I was there, I noticed the gene pool was pretty small-- ya gotta know there ain't no branches on that family tree.  But back to engines, Turbines are powerful and reliable but just plain noisy whereas recips, especially round ones touch our very souls with their throbbing vibration, a visceral experience that affects most of us the same way, with exhilaration.
