A tow plane and a Cirrus had a mid-air near Boulder, Colorado Saturday afternoon.  The glider being towed was able to release and landed safely.

The two powered airplanes crashed in fields NW of Boulder.

A sad day for the Colorado aviation community..     Cry

They've changed the number to 3 killed.  2 in the cirrus and 1 in the tow plane.   There were 3 people in the glider who landed safely.

3 is still 3 too many...
there were 2 people in the glider.

the Cirrus chute actually deployed, but the thing was all busted up and on fire. kind of horrible to watch....

Completely horrible to watch.

That parachute is way impressive - I've never seen a Cirrus chute in action before.  It's easy to believe that in a different scenario the chute could save lives.

You know, Muppet, that seemed to make it even sadder somehow.  To see that burning wreckage touch down so gently made it even crueler that the two men didn't survive.

Mid-airs!!!   Bang head

They've always been the ONE thing that's scary about flying to me...  everything else you've been trained for, or else you're just screwing up because you're an idiot.  But, someone running into you.....  man!  Not much chance there..

At least the glider pilot saw the Cirrus at the very last second, and got away.  Even then, they flew through the fireball...  crazy.

There were some earlier eyewitness reports of one or more people having jumped.  I have not seen that confirmed.  Might it be possible that the occupants of the Cirrus jumped out after the parachute deployed in order to escape the flames?

I'm hoping it didn't end that way for them.   Cry

I've read two separate interviews where people on the ground said they saw the two persons jump from the wreckage at about 500-700 feet AGL.

The NTSB lady didn't say anything about it, though.

I think the preliminary report is due out tomorrow...

Such a sad, terrible deal.
