Getting a new member in the aviation career in four years.
« on: August 21, 2009, 04:01:17 PM »
First off, I know it's been awhile since I've been here. I haven't had Internet since April because of a move. I don't miss it, but I do wish I could hit my haunts from time to time. I'm at a library right now.

Anyway, I moved to Kilgore, TX from Abilene, TX and am going to school in Longview (LeTourneau University). I intend to start a career in Aviation Maintenance. My degree program is Aviation Maintenance with a Concentration in Electrical Systems. Basically, I will be an Electrical Engineer with an A&P.

I volunteered at an EAA Young Eagle Day one day and looked around at all of the pilots and their jobs. I quickly came to the conclusion that I didn't need to fly professionally to fly. I simply realized I needed a good job. I had worked as an avionics tech in the Marine Corps. Honestly, I wasn't very good at it. I was not living up to my potential. Since then, I've been working on squashing bad habits and addictions while building my mind and motivation. I see a lot of hard work with learning the skills it takes and to pay attention to what I'm told. I've been working to unlearn my previous mindset, and come at school with a brand new mind for the job and the career. So, here's to a new career with much less screwing around. Here's to more of me having my head in the game.

Perhaps you'll have a chance to see me in the years to come. I will appreciate any and all comments made here. I just have to make a disclaimer. I don't know when I'll be back, so don't get discouraged if I don't reply soon, and don't get mad if I bump this topic if it hasn't been active for awhile. Keep doing what you guys do best, and I'll see you around when I get a chance.

Mercy me!  That's quite a post YawningMan!

First, as a Veteran, I congratulate you and thank you for your service to our country.   |:)\  Your goals are very laudable indeed, and I wish you the best in your pursuit of your education.  What I do not understand is why you wish to pursue EE if you didn't like Avionics Tech while you were in the Corps?  To my simple truck-driver way of thinking, a degree in mechanical engineering would be a better fit to an A&P.  Can you expand on your declared major a bit more?  I'm not being critical, I'm just curious.

Pilots are always a dime a dozen, while mechanics are worth their weight in gold in Aviation.  You appear to be on the right track.  I just stumbled into mine, and I am trying to avoid stumbling out of it before the market turns around.   ::banghead::

Thank you for returning and posting something about your life.  We will be following your updates with great interest.

What I do not understand is why you wish to pursue EE if you didn't like Avionics Tech while you were in the Corps?
I started my video game addiction in the Corps. That should pretty well sum it up. I liked it well enough, I just wasn't any good at it. I'm not playing video games like I used to. I actually worked on homework for 3 hours today! A year ago, that would not have happened. I finally began to realize that my video game addiction was no less destructive than alcohol dependency. I'd say I didn't even have a support group, but I did have a girlfriend help me through the process.

I finally reached a point where I began to crave change, so it really wasn't that hard to let an addiction diminish. It was a gradual thing, but it was a necessary thing, and I'm ready to tackle life with a renewed fervor.

Hope that answers your question.
