AOPA benefits
« on: March 29, 2006, 10:42:37 PM »
Hi guys!

I have another AOPA question. I just got my "annual membership package" in the mail today and there is sooooo much stuff in there my head is spinning.

I would just like to know how many of you are taking advantage of their benefit packages, and if yes which ones?
ie. insurance, legal services, life insurance, and whatever else they're offering ???
Any experiences in that area?

Thanks!

Right now the only benefit I'm taking advantage of is my yearly entry into the sweepstakes ;)

After graduation and I have a bit more time to invest in flying, I'll probably grab a few of their insurance offers.

I take advantage of their legal services plan, and have also been using a number of the regular services they offer that are encompassed within the normal membership benefits (i.e. medical staff help, outreach programs, etc.).  I do not use them for my aviation insurance only because at the time I was getting my renters policy they didn't have a category that fit me at the time.  I've heard that has since changed, and their rates are competitve.  I use AVEMCO for my renter's policy.  The legal services plan is probably one of the best "bangs for the buck" around.  I hope never to have to use them, but I know my $12.00 per year is cheap for that level of peace of mind.

I already have life insurance coverage outside of AOPA, so I don't take advantage of that with them.  I do have the AOPA Visa card, which is nice.  You can charge your plane rental, fuel, and purchases of other items with it, and you get 5% back on those purchases (provided the vendor is a participant... which a lot are) up to $250.00 per year.  It helps defray the costs of flying even more as a result.  Sporty's Pilot Shop gives you the 5% with your AOPA number at checkout too, which is another plus.

Other things I take advantage of are the ePilot magazines, which are emailings of articles for both the AOPA Flight Training, and AOPA Pilot magazines, which are great to have.  Experienced, and student pilots alike can benefit from the AOPA Flight Training magazine.  My daughter is a prospective pilot with 12 hours in her logbook, so I got that for her, and found that I read it as much as she does! :)  It's nice to have it in electronic form too.

I also use the PATH to Aviation area to get materials that I hand out when I do my volunteer work at the St. Louis Science Center in the Mission Control: Take the Control's exhibit.  Brochures, pamphlets, plastic "Future Pilot" wings, puzzle books, etc. for all ages are created by AOPA to further aviation interest and knowledge.

I also am registered with them as a Pilot Mentor (a free program) that matches pilots to propective pilots to act as mentors through their flight training and help the student through the phases of their instruction.  This is not something that you have to be a CFI to participate in, as you are not giving instruction, just acting as a guide.  AOPA provides the information and resources for the Pilot Mentor.  As a mentor, I can sponsor someone through the program, and they get six months of membership and AOPA Flight Training magazine free for those six months.  After completion of the Private Pilot certificate, the student is awarded a gift certificate to Sporty's Pilot Shop (currently a $50.00 value) on behalf of AOPA and Sporty's.

As I noted above, I take advantage of the AOPA Medical staff and Turbo Medical Application for help with my going through the hurdles for my Class III (I'm on a special issuance), and they have helped me tremendously.

Let's see... what else... oh... I like their photo gallery... great for research if you don't know what a given plane looks like :)  It also has some wonderful images in it that make great wallpaper, etc. :)

I used them to finance the 182 a few years ago, and then also used AOPA insurance to cover it... no problems and they were always easy to deal with.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!
And special Thanks to you Ted for the detailed info.

I think I have the legal services plan (or at least I paid for it in the past) because it seemed like a good deal.
But I can't find any paperwork on it. I am dealing with so many records as chief pilot that I might have misplaced it somewhere. Do they send you some sort of policy or do you just pay your 12 bucks and that's it.
Would you know how to find out, Ted?
What do you have?

No problem, Mike :)

Yes, they send you a certificate of insurance for you to retain.  I'm sure that if you have lost or misplaced yours, you can get a replacement by calling their member services phone number 1-800-USA-AOPA (872-2672), and let them know what you need.  The insurance is an annual renewal, and can be automatically renewed to your credit card along with your membership, which is what I do.  In fact, I use that with my AOPA Visa card and get the added benefit of the auto-renewal discount too.  It saves $4.00 per year off the membership cost, which is just enough to buy a cup of coffee or three post-flight :)  Obviously, it's more for the convienience of continued renewal with no worries about forgetting :)  If I had to worry about the $4.00 discount I better not be spending $$ on flying, if you know what I mean :) :)

Oh, I guess I should also mention that if you join up with the AOPA Air Safety Foundation via a donation, that is tax deductible :)  I do that too.

The AOPA members website with it's flight planning stuff is worth the price of admission on it's own and I carry the legal insurance because I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law, no matter how hard you try to be legal.

Thanks again.

I just called them and it turns out I am actually on the "commercial legal" plan (still, just like I thought).
The lady on the phone was really nice and I can recommend this plan.

Even when wbarnhill said, he didn't have the money to buy extra benefits, I say this is a couple of bucks well spent. (well unless you're not flying at all)
Most of the youngsters on the forum have probably never dealt with the FAA, but I have. I deal with them all the time and trust me, in case of an incident or accident, you will want legal representation. I have a lot of friends who lost their licenses over some really silly things too.

One of my pilots had an argument over a parking spot and my pilot (he's a hot head sometimes) hit the other guy. The other guy turned around and called the FAA claiming he was on the ramp and my pilot (btw. that was before he became "my pilot") tried to run him down with his helicopter bouncing the skids off his head and he had the black eye to prove it.
The FAA did an emergency evocation of his license first and then asked questions later. It cost a lot of lawyer fees to get it back and he got off on a technicality because statement wise it was him against the other guy.

So I recommend if you just want to get the minimum insurance when you go fly. Get the legal package.

I just read that if you're a member you can get a free FS2004 AOPA Commander 112 add-on! Sadly I found this out by first finding a link that had a cracked version of it and comments asking for other cracked add-ons, that is so depressing that people don't respect ownership of things just because it's software. I was originally searching for "FS2004 Commander 112" since I know one was just released as payware so it's a lot newer than the FS2002/2004 Commander 115 that's a few years old now,  I didn't know there was a AOPA version that you could get for free if a member though. The 112 also has a version with a glass cockpit upgrade and it should be pretty cool to fly and accurate I think.

Btw the pirate-link was for a torrent-file so I sadly doubt it can be stopped even though it was out in the open on a public site, the nerve/lack of moral of some people.

If there's any other learner-flyer Brits, the UKside flavlour of AOPA does a free first membership for student pilots.

Don't know whether the USside one does similar?

I don't believe they do, they should though, it would help retain interest in aviation.   We have a lot student pilots quit after a few hours because some instructors don't try to make the learning experience pleasant and an eletist attitude among a lot of pilots----hours and attitude doesn't make you a good stick, learning and hard work does! :)

AOPA does have a program set up for student pilots.   They can get a 6 month membership and 6 months of Flight Training magazine for free.
