Parachuting accident(s) that may occur
« on: March 21, 2006, 08:12:35 PM »
Ok, i thought that sharing you the dangers of parachuting would be wise. Here they go - The accidents happened.
All accidents cateogrized from the serious to the not-so-serious.
1)Death of a fellow parachuter - parachute didn't open - happened only once, rest in peace.
2)Loosing a limb (of a fellow parachuter) - limb gets caught somewhere or bad landing - happened 0 times but many close ones.
3)Fracturing a bone (of a fellow parachuter) - < - Happened MANY and COUNTLESS times!
4)Loosing your sanity (of a fellow parach - i have to stop saying this...) < - happens only when major panic, happened once.
5)And other health issues (theres many) < - if i got a penny for every single time this happened i wouldn't BE HERE!

So anyone, whomever considers parachuting - It is not a 100% safe thing !

So do I. I lost my father in a parahcute-accident as I was 16. After that I avoided this sport.
If helicopter flying would be difficult, engineers would do it.

Roland, as said, it is definetly not a safe sport or a hobby - jump at your own risk.
And Ted, as long as the wings stay on you stay in the plane, eh ? Well...but when the wings come off and you find yourself with no parachute and no parachute training ;D - i like to stay prepared for the worst.

And Roland, my sympathies....im sorry to hear that mate :(

My sincerest condolences too, Roland.

Call me chicken... no pun intended.... but I'm just not a skydiver type.

If the wings are coming off the plane, in all likelyhood there would be insufficient time, or ability to even get out of a civilian plane (no ejection system), so, it's unlikely a survivable situation.  The g-forces inside the cockpit and the rolling that would occurr would prevent one from making an exit easily without being killed.  These are not like WWII bombers or fighters where one could pop the back door and have handholds, etc.

Ted: That line is really good and I agree.

Roland: That's even worse than me loosing my dad to cancer when I was 20, my sincerest condolences.

About skydiving in general then I don't mind getting a trip up there, but I prefer to go back down with the plane, especially if it's a Porter, that is one amazing plane!

NO PUN INTENDED??? That would have been a great pun! . . . . too bad you gave it away....  ;)

Chuck isn't a skydiver type either (you know since he's portraying the "typical pilot" with his why-jump-out-of-a-perfectly-function-plane-? attitude....)

Did you guys hear about the british crewman who jumped out of the plane because it was on fire without his parachute (because it was on fire as well) and lived?!!?!?!
He fell through some tree branches then on a steep slope with thick snowpack and when he got to the bottom of the hill he just brushed himself off and went "whew, what a ride!"
Or is it an urban myth?

A comedian (I listen a lot to internet comedy-radio to keep my mood up) mentioned that there was a book out about a guy that jumped from an airplane and fell 30K ft and the chute didn't open and he lived, the comic made an imitation of someone that couldn't really talk, ew, not that funny since I imagined it for real and then there's nothing funny and I'm scared of heights if what I'm standing on feels unstable.

Yeah, it's kinda odd.  I doubt I could do skydiving due to my weird fear of heights.  Put me somewhere that there's a chance of me falling, and I'm going to freak out.  Put me at the same spot with a restraint, and I'll be perfectly happy.  Thus why flying doesn't bother me, but I'm not egressing unless absolutely necessary.  Even if there's a fire, I'm cutting the fuel flow, emergency descent, and hope for the best.

I believe there several---one was Alan MaGee (now deceased) of Angel Fire New Mexico who was featured in a Smithsonian article in 1981--he was a ball turret gunner in a B-17.    One of those "NO S**T" experiences!

I have the same sacred fear of heights and everybody always asked me how it happens that I fly. Happy to know I'm not a strange element!!!! ;)
I give that landing a 9 . . . on the Richter scale.

Happylanding, I have a fear of heights too, but I've deduced it's based on lack of security because when I got that flight in a Cardinal a few years ago I looked right out the window and straight down and wasn't really scared, just some mild butterflies fluttering in my stomach but that was the flight itself, my first and sadly so far only one.

And I'm not much of a skydiver either, as I've said before, I'll gladly go up with skydivers in a plane, but I'll go back down in it too, especially if it's a Porter!  8)

I have that same fear of heights also, so don't worry happylanding.  Its weird though I was doing some PSD(Plastic Sphere Dispenser) training last week and we hook the machine up in the heli with the door off.  The operator practically sits on the machine with half you body hanging out the door when the machine is being used.  I wasn't scared at all even though I had to look behind the ship to see if the balls were igniting.  And the whole skydiving, no thank you, even a busted plane has a better glide ration then I do.
WOW I did that!

As you say in your signature
What goes up, must come down
and if I have to decide how to come down, it will be landing, not surely just thanks to gravity!!!
I give that landing a 9 . . . on the Richter scale.
