now I wonder if the pilots could have done anything by disengaging the autopilot and moving the throttle forward.
did they try to do that?
if they did and nothing worked . . . that must have been a sinking feeling (pun somewhat intended....since nobody got hurt)

Yes, they did try manually adding power.

Yes, they did try manually adding power.
