Hey there I'll try to help as much as I can, thou I myself don't fly here anymore.
Flying at UND is an amazing program. I assume that you're coming here on the China Airways program that UND has. Don't worry about learning much about flying until you get here. UND has a special program set up with China to get you guys up and running on english, aerodynamics, culture, and all that good stuff.
If you want to start listening to live traffic head over to
www.liveatc.netThat website allows you to listen to any Class B airport, and most of the class C's and D's. If you go into the class D sections, there are also a few centers and tracons in which you can listen. The airport itself is about 5 miles West of Grand Forks, has 3 runways (there is talk and money floating around about adding one or two more in the next couple of years) and is a class D airport. The tower guys there are all really friendly. Since I'm an ATC major, I know all of them and they all work traffic really well, they're pretty forgiving and will help ya out for the most part.
Cruiser is right, winter here is very cold. Last year i think our coldest day was -28F with a wind chill that day of -55F. As of right now its sunny and warm, I'm wearing shorts and a sweat shirt to class today. Grand Forks is a fairly small town, about 55 thousand people. We're pretty much in the middle of no where, though you hop a bus/train to Minneapolis for about 15 bucks. If you want to know more about Grand Forks, shoot me or Gulfstream driver a message, he's a UND grad and I should be graduating (knock on wood) in December.
