I had the same thing happen in the Platypus where I had a bunch of dirt and crap in there.  But it wouldn't die on me until I would go IMC in below freezing temps.  Then the moisture would cake up inside the Pitot on all the dirt and the Pitot Heat couldn't melt it, so there I would sit and watch my airspeed indicator go to Zero on both sides of the cockpit.  Talk about an attention getter!   ::eek::  I actually replaced the Pitot thinking that was the problem, but it continued.  Finally my avionics guy thought to blow out the pitot system and he recovered a pretty good pile of dust that had worked its way into there.  After that, I went ahead and bought a Pitot cover and I now use it religiously!

I don't know if I'd call it a "Lucky charm" but I always wear a Eagle necklace.  Have since I was a teenager, shortly after my grandmother died and I ended up with one.  My current one is about 15 years old (on the 3rd chain I think) and is an Eagle in flight clutching a small diamond.  Wife had it made special for me.  Like I say, I'm not sure it's lucky, but it's always there!

I always wear a silver bracelet when I'm on a fire, have ever since my rookie year.  Not only is it a totem, but when the situation gets too hairball it heats up and "bites" my arm, signalling me to re-evaluate our position and what we are attempting in the face of fire behavior.

I skimmed through the thread, so I'm not sure if he covered it, but I always felt better sliding for Mike when I knew I had IG Joe as my spotter.....

He might still be with that aircraft. I have a hard time removing a good-luck charm from the aircraft. Feels like it might be bad luck.
Did you know the GI-Joe story made it into a book?
It's in the "True Pilot Stories" book which, of course, we have to have in our online store at well....
