Blue Angels come to Salinas, CA
« on: September 26, 2007, 09:58:03 PM »
Greetings from Salinas California, known as the salad bowl of North America.  I'm here for a few days on business, and they are getting set up for the Salinas International Airshow.  I knew the Blue Angels were going to be coming to town today, so I decided to hang out at the airport and see if I could get any decent pics of them flying in.  Hope you like them.

Oh BTW...  the Canadian Snowbirds are supposed to be here at the Airshow also.  I'll post pics of them when I get the chance.  You hear that Gil?   ::cowboy::

Even my lowly Platypus gets some attention.  Quite an interesting neighbor, an old WWII Torpedo bomber.

Very cool indeed! Is the platypus what you call your regular plane? Very nice vintage plane as well, also flying or just on display?

Yes Frank, I call my Pilatus the Platypus!  Hehe.  (Hear that, Gibbo?)  The vintage plane is a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber.  Apparently, it will be just a static display.  My airplane will be moved tomorrow to the south side of the airport so I can depart on Friday.

Too bad the TBF will be static. :( :(  Nothing like a radial engine singing to make the lot more interesting

You bet!

I have heard a lot of planes, but radials, especially its startup, beats it all... Z-37, Li-2, Su-31.. T-6 Texan has even given some nice flame effects to it  ;D

Today was familiarization day for the Blues.  This is where they go up and fly around the area familiarizing themselves with the local landmarks and get acquainted with the constraints of the local terrain (Salinas sits in a wide valley with 3000ft mountains on either side).

While they were up, a contingent of 3 Snowbirds landed.

Two other static display birds on hand today:  The venerable Douglas DC3 and an A10 tankbuster, A.K.A. the Warthog... so named by its pilots because its so ugly!  I hear that they love em all the same.  Note the 30mm Gatling gun in the nose of the A10.

More great pics.  Didn't know you flew Pilatus rooster.  How's Salinas haven't flown in there for a few weeks.  Where in California you fly out of and ever come into Livermore.
WOW I did that!
