General Discussion / Re: Old-School Simulators

After just a bit more digging, I think they're actually called ground trainers. Does anyone have any more insight? I haven't seen one in nearly two decades.

General Discussion / Old-School Simulators
« Last post by YawningMan on October 31, 2017, 06:12:24 PM »
I just found myself thinking about FAA certified simulators. I heard about it from the Flite-Tech audio CDs, since my wife has them.

As I recall, old-school simulators did not necessarily have a screen attached. In fact, I remember seeing some that were basically a panel with instruments and a table with an apparatus that you can attach a felt-tip pen to so that it can track your course over an actual sectional, or a glass set over your chart.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I suddenly became curious about these things. Do they still exist in this world of lots of high-fallutin' and fancy simulator setups?

This is video (not by me so not my fault they didn't know to turn their phone sideways) of water being dropped on a fire I was fighting a couple weeks ago.   I'm not familiar with the model of these aircraft though.   We had both of those doing circuits to a nearby lake as well as a helitack and a convair made a single trip out.   There's also a good video somewhere of them dipping from the lake.

Evergreen filed for bankruptcy and the sale of the 747-200 tanker (N470EV) was frozen in December 2013 and was sitting intact but idle.
In 2015 Global SuperTanker Services transferred the sprayer from the stored 747-200 into a 747-400BCF
The -400 has improved engines and will out perform the -200.

The boast about the most minor things
747-200 carries 19,200 gallons
747-400 carries 19,600 gallons
Only 400 gallons more

Didn't the -200 get scrapped though?

The problems still remain with these large tankers that they aren't exactly the best for a lot of the terrain fire can be found in.  They're pretty good for a lot of places we have in Alaska I think though.

Hi everyone, it would be great to get feedback from some operators of various GA models – I threw together a survey regarding a remanufactured Cessna 421C/414A. It has some cool information about the new model, called "Turbine Eagle," and respondents enter a drawing to receive one of five $100 Amazon gift cards.
