Cliffs notes: Famous person and friends go on fishing trip. They have fun. They get in a Cirrus SR-22 to go home, decide to have more fun and do a low pass on the lake. Forget that they aren't in a float plane and that getting low enough to actually touch down on the lake might be a bad idea. Drag landing gear on lake and go for a swim in cold water with no one around, far from the nearest shore which is also quite far from civilization. Spend night outside in the cold with no emergency equipment.

Well, water skiing with your tires is and old stupid cub trick. But I've neaver heard of anyone doing it in a tri gear plane. I understand you need to lock the brakes for it to work. ::)

Except I get the impression they didn't exactly mean to do it. ;)
I've heard stories from back where I was in Tennessee that a guy with a Pitts used to do it on a local lake really early in the mornings before people started waking up (lake was kind of in the middle of nowhere at the time).

Swing by Tamarack and pick up a copy of the "Big Rocks and Long Props" DVD, just ask the teenage girl at the counter for the Cub Porn video ;D. Those guys use the water skiing trick to land on really short gravel bars. They Set down on the water (with wheels) and "ski" the plane up to the gravel bar maintaining just enough speed to keep from sinking. It's a great "stupid cub tricks" video. ::loony::

No kidding. I feel sorry for Cirrus because they have a very, very safe aircraft, but the pilots who fly them are celebs with too big a checkbook and too little of training and experience. The poor guys made such a great aircraft, but it keeps coming up in such a negative way in the media. They must feel like, ah... ::banghead::

As far as Cirrus. I admit not having ever flown one, but I remember hearing that they have some nasty stall characteristics.
Just still not convinced about their safety.

IIRC, they were able to get around a bunch of the stall requirements by installing the parachute. I think I'd have worn a belt *and* suspenders in that regard. CYA, ya know.

Exactly, and that's what I don't like. There has been at least one fatality after encountering turbulence. When you get into turbulence you reduce to manuevering speed so the aircraft will stall before doing structural damage. If they are unstable in smooth air, what are they going to do in the chop when you're being bounced all over? What about when on final in gusty conditions?
An aircraft that has a tendency to spin that can't recover from them. Ideal, isn't it?

Weird. And here I remember the video of the Lancair Columbia showing it's wing-design where the inner part stalled before the outer part so it had good roll-control even in a stall. And when I watched that for the first time only a year ago at most I thought: Doesn't all planes have this? And if not then why not? I still won't fly one due to the weird stick though, I know I can't handle having my arm in such a position.
You would think though that people would appreciate some good news once in a while but no, they have to see the bad stuff. Here in Denmark there have been carcrashes with kids trapped in cars and the medics and firemen couldn't get to them because people were taking pictures of the children with the mobilephone cameras! ::complaining: ::rambo:: ::rambo:: That is one thing that REALLY makes me angry and sick to my stomach as well. Not only weren't they helping they were blocking for the crew so the police had to push people away. That is sick in the true sense of the word.

It's a traditional supercub short field trick as well (don't think that was mentioned before?).
Waterski on the water as you approach a sand bar and drop airspeed. Use the hydroplaning to hold you up as you lose lift and decrease the landing distance.
I've been told there's an excellent video of cubs doing trips like that availible at the pilot shops around here.

I've talked to a couple guys around here who've done it. Even one who used to water ski his c-180 on a regular basis.

It looks like fun to me but there ARE things you aren't supposed to say "look like fun" OUT LOUD. You know... all the things we secretly would love to do. I mean, let's be honest. I always wanted to fly under a bridge, for instance. But.. NOPE.
Reason this came up, a buddy has a picture hanging on the wall of a group of guys skiing and the discussion was "Should we take down the picture before the new FAA guy comes over?"

Who said anything about a nosedragger?!?!?! I'm just not a good swimmer -- if I wanted to play in the water, I would rather have FLOATS than rely on my skiing ability to keep me out of the drink. ;D
