I know I'm the oldest old coot here but humor me for a minute-- ::angel:: my sainted mother ::angel:: used to sing a popular song from the 1930s (I believe) that was about a biplane ride where the lyrics contained "we went loopty loop"---- anybody else out there old enough to help me out (DonYan maybe?) ::thinking:: May not be relevant to Digits quest but what the hell, at my age, I'm grateful if my mind can still wander (even in the wrong direction!) :-\

allrightie, thank you all!
next question: does there exist something that allow you to listen to music in the plane ? :) i was thinking about a convertor to plug your mp3 player into the mike of the passenger, since that would automatically be cut off when atc is speaking. downside is that that won't work if you are flying with some friends. so, does there exist some other convertor to, for example, plug mp3 + passenger mike into 1 hole ? (i hope you know what i mean).
just think it would be fun flying with the top gun theme on the background :D

yes, there is a attachment that works with your ipod that hooks into the PA system. It stay on the entire time, but then the radio registers a call, it cuts out and you hear the call. Ive used it a couple of time on solo xcountries and it works pretty well.

Have heard of converters but I just put one earbud in and leave the other one out and make sure any radio calls are a lot louder then music. I only use it during the long straight and level portions of the flight. Not during the departure and arrival.

I don't remember it well, but one of my friends and I brought a CD player along, and he had some sort of... something that we could hook the CD player into the comms. Of course, when he transmitted, the tower heard the music too, but they didn't seem to actually say anything about it.
This was back in '95 or '96, though. Pentium was a brand new concept in the world of computers back then.

but i guess, in that case, you need a separate hole for the ipod? (so eg in a cessna with 2 people in it you can't use it unless one of them disconnects his mike ?)

No, it plugged into the comms on one of the sides, and it played through the comm system so both people heard it, as if you were just talking to each other, Ill email my friend that I borrowed it from and see if he can tell me the name of it.

Many intercom systems have a music-in jack right on the face...No need to use a headset jack. I think it's a regular 2.5mm jack, just like the headset jack on your mp3 player. The radio and the intercom will cut out the music, so you can talk with ATC and your passenger. You may have to play with the squelch and volume in order to hear it, though.

I've been using a little portable intercom in my plane for a couple years now. I came with a cord to plug an walkman or Ipod into it. Can be heard by both people, and automatically cuts out the music when transmitting or recieving. I find I don't use it much any more, was to much of a pain to change disks in my walkman if there was any turbulance at all. I'm guessing an Ipod wouldn't have that problem though. ;)

Ooh! I just discovered this topic now! I love musical challenges! :) Not remembering a singer, a song or lyrics can really drive me crazy!!
Well, Brian already put forward some really good suggestions! Especially the Foo Fighters song! I love the video to that song, by the way.
Here are some more: "Learning to fly" by Tom Petty "Leaving on a jet plane" by whoever... does anybody know who sang that? "Up where we belong" by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes (a bit cheesy though). "Aces High" by Iron Maiden... a song about the Battle of Britain, I think.
That's all I can think of right now! |:)\

"Leaving on a Jet Plane" is by the... Mamas And The Papas
I really like that song, as well as "steam powered Aeroplane" by the... Soggy Bottom Boys (yes, it's bluegrass style)
Oh, and I ended up with an MP3 player... I do the whole 1 earbud in an ear thing as well. We don't use MP3 players etc anytime we are below 10,000 ft, but that's not really practical in a Cessna. Many of the new headsets have an input jack for an MP3 player, in that case you are the only one who can hear it (doesn't do anything for the passengers). Many of the captains I fly with have that style of headset and almost all of them take advantage of it to listen to music. Usually it's the ANR headsets that have the input jack and the jack will be with the ANR controls in the cord. I have "poor man's ANR" and just put earplugs under the headset and turn everything up louder...

john denver also has a song "leaving on a jetplane". thank you for the other suggestions!
Chantal Kreviazuk sang that song for the movie "Armageddon". It sounds really nice! :) :) :)

How about Tailgunner ::rambo:: - Ted Nugent?!? and Iron Maiden had a song of the name...Bomber - Motorhead (ooops sorry my teenaged music roots coming out >:D)
And as far as listening to MP3's in the air check these ::thinking::
I haven't tried them out but all reports say they are OK!!

It's not a "flying" song per-say but Give Me Shelter by the Rolling Stones was a crucial bit of music in the final scenes of Air America (going to the rescue in a C-123)

Here's another one, from Iron Eagle, King Cobra, appearently the official music video however using a early japanese anime for the video, still aviation related however. Appearently it's called Area 88 although someone mentioned the title U.N. Squadron and I remember an Amiga game from the late 80s or early 90s where a character had that hair-style over the eyes so maybe one is an alternative title but the same story?

I have a bit of flying songs. Some rock, some folk, some classical, some movie themes. Here's a sample of some I have. I always pop in this CD when I go flying or to airshows.
Some of these get your heart pumping, others are melodramatic, and relaxing. Well I could go on. A small smattering. Enjoy

In the business school I work at, this song is taken as an example in marketing class. There are 2 strategies for consumers who go complain online. First, a strategy to find a resolution and second, a strategy to have vengeance. I let you guess witch category "united breaks guitars" fall into. "resolution finders" rarely get satisfaction but "vengers" always do. Even without being heard by 10millions, you will always be happy once you bitch online at a company who disrespected you.
They evaluate that damage to United Brand and the lost of market capitalisation to over 150Million$. It's been 2 years since this video was put online and still today, almost daily, peoples use this youtube video comments to talk about their stories with united bagage claims.

That's a really interesting story!! I guess I usually fall into category 1. A company really has to go a long way to make me seek vengeance. But then it has definitely deserved it. In this case they really deserved it too, it seems. Shows how important customer service is. Or having employees with common sense would be. But I guess they won't pay their package handlers handsomly, so what can you expect.
My guitar teacher once told me to never check in your guitar. Always take it as carry on. The flight attendants usually are friendly enough to find a special place for your baby. But then, I guess times have changed. They'd probably try to charge you extra nowadays. Also, when you travel with more than one guitar I guess the carry on luggage option becomes unrealistic at some point.
