Title: Surprise!!!
Post by: spacer on January 03, 2007, 05:07:16 PM
I took Mrs Velo to the doc yesterday to do some bloodwork, and then we were supposed to head over to the hospital for an ultrasound
on her gall bladder.
Her doc took a look at her blood pressure (182/120) and called a specialist, who told us "Get thee to the hospital now. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200"
Her blood pressure spiked at the hospital at around 250/180 and she was sent to the O.R.
Turns out she had HELP syndrome, an advanced form of:

Quote
Pre-eclampsia may develop at varying times within pregnancy and its progress differs between patients; most cases present pre-term. It has no known cure apart from ending the pregnancy (induction of labor or abortion). It may also present up to 6 weeks post-partum. It is the most common dangerous complication of pregnancy, and it may affect both the mother and the fetus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-eclampsia

At around 1:26 pm yesterday, Zoe was taken by C-section and carted off to NICU for some really careful treatment. She's at 29 weeks, and a couple months premature, but began crying immediately when she was clear of mommy. She breathed on her own for about 14 hours before they put her on a ventilator to give her little lungs a rest.
Mrs Velo's blood pressure came down to normal after delivery, and she'll be in Labor & Delivery for a few more hours before they move her to a regular room.

Keep all yer appendages crossed, folks.
Jim

Sure as hell we well keep everything crossed.
I was born premature too, 26 years ago, at the 23rd week. if you have any question, just feel free to ask, maybe  I can be of some help.

And, in the meantime, my best wishes to mrs. velo too. to recover soon from the C section!

Wow that was some surprise indeed, but glad Zoe and Mrs. Velo seems to be doing well under the circumstances, at least from what I understand. I wasn't born prematurely, but was the smallest of my mom's 3 kids but am now bigger (taller) than both my siblings, but also the one with the most grey hair despite a 14/17 year age difference  ??? ::rofl::

Best wishes to the whole family and hope to hear good news but of course, make sure you and your family are taken care of first  ::angel:: |:)\ ::wave::

Heck, we haven't finished her room yet!
She'll be in the hospital for maybe a couple of months, though, so we'll have a little time to get
ready for her homecoming.

Guess I've missed a lot in the last 2 weeks.  Congrats, Jim!  All the best, and I hope Zoe gets bigger soon.

Must be the winter of premature births.  My boss here at the airport just had one born on Thanksgiving that was a month and a half early.

Congratulations and welcome to the big, scary world little Zoe!

My granddaughter was a premie and I know the worries you're going through. You're family is in my prayers, but things will be alright. The docs told my son that if nothing bad cropped up in the first week or so, chances were very good nothing would.

They keep premies in incubators to allow their small organs to develop in a less stressful manner.

Mrs Velo is home, and doing better. It's more of a challenge keeping her down now, as she's naturally quite the busy type.
Zoe is also doing well, up to 3lbs 4oz as of two days ago, though she'll stay in the hospital until she gains a bit more and becomes
comfortable with the bottle.
Thanks for the good thoughts, folks.

Hehe, it barely makes a difference when you're using the so called "eagle technique" (circling with you finger above the keyboard until you find the right key and then strike).  ;D

By the way, the walls of her room now have their color-coats, green on the bottom half, blue up top.
Before long, I'll probably do a carbon-transfer of the enlarged Roost-Air 172, and paint in the details, and maybe strap on a small
smoke generator so Chuck can spell out Zoe's name on the wall.

Another surprise:
Since Zoe was doing so darned well at the hospital, they kicked her out today.
This is about three weeks before we'd planned, but she had other plans.... kinda like
with her birth.
So, we're sitting in the living room, watching Serenity and feeding her. Lucy and Twizzler
have been banished to the back yard until we get things sorted out here. They ain't happy...
but ah well.

Serenity. That's a good movie. River can fly left-seat with me anytime  ;). She could also beat the crap out of me with those weird woman mood swings. One of the dangers of relationships eh?

Cool, it's always great to hear good news from good people :)  |:)\ Btw, those two other names, they're the dogs right? (my memory is a bit strained lately due to bad sleep).

Btw, I have Serenity too although it wasn't until my best friend Chey mentioned it I even knew the whole series existed, danish tv doesn't show much sci-fi and I haven't really watched tv in months. About River then according to the bits of things I remember then those fighting-skills weren't due to woman mood swings but something that was done to her.

River was a prodigy, incredibly intelligent and very good at anything she tried, including dancing.
The government trapped her in a 'school', where they turned her into a weapon.
Some of her mental abilities, with some exposure to some highly-placed folks from the parliament,
caused her quite a lot of difficulty.
I've been a Browncoat for a little over a year, and I'd suggest to anyone that they watch the
series first (available on Amazon.com) before watching the movie. You could easily tell the folks
'in the know' from everyone else after watching the movie. It's my favorite show.

Haven't seen the series, thou I want too.  Love the opening sequence from the movie, music is outstanding, as well as the the whole, "my ship doesn't crash" amongst other things in there.

If you watch the series, there's a lot of stuff in the movie which will make more sense.
Inara spent the whole series aboard Serenity, for instance, as did Shepard Book.

Well I do live under my mom's room but that's because she lives on the first floor (or is that second story? I can never figure out the english system. From the entrance it's one flight of stairs up to her room). I no longer live at home because I want to though, apart from helping my mom in return for what she did.

Btw, "nerd" actually means an expert in his/her field so in my opinion it's a compliment :D

I knew a lot of people who read the books but didn't like the movie because of "inconsistancies"

I thought the movie was great.

Careful about that improbability drive though...
Title: Re: Surprise!!!
Post by: switchtech on March 01, 2007, 03:06:12 AM
If they didn't like the inconsistancies, they shouldn't have liked the books - since they took liberties with the BBC TV series, and that took liberties with the original Radio Broadcasts.....  And I understand Douglas Adams wanted to make more changes yet.  He liked that the radio show, tv series, and books were different.

Finally, even if you have your towel, you need to remember to bring some peanuts, too.

Had some days in Jan. and Feb. that were cold enough to suspend flight operations.  I've been doing some flying with students and a smattering of photography ops for the locals.  One of my students has to quit for 3 months because he's opening his lodge for the summer next month and needs to stay up there constantly.

I apparently waited too long to talk to the guy with the fire contract, so I'll only be a back-up for the Baudette route this year.  I'm not sure how he'll justify paying someone else to fly back and forth from Park Rapids every day, when he could just base the plane here and have me fly it.  It's an extra hour each way in a 172.   ::loony::

The lake is starting to open up.  Someone put a 3/4 ton pickup through the ice the other day (in only 6 feet of water) on Four-Mile Bay.  The river is starting to thaw, as well -- we had 4 feet of ice on it after that cold snap.  It's open shore to shore up river from the airport about 10 miles.  Won't take long for the rest to break up.  The fishing is picking up again as the walleye move back towards the lake.  Mosquito season will soon be upon us.

How's foggy N. Cali?

Dunno if you've been into the forks lately, but the Red is already breaking up too.  Where it splits under the 4th ave bridge, there is a pretty good ice dam there.  Should be an interesting spring.

Haven't been there in a few months, but our cable comes out of Fargo, so we get all the ND news that I pretty much don't pay attention to because I don't live there.  This area of the state is like the bastard child that no one pays attention to until something really bad happens.  But, we have great tourist destinations.

Haven't been there in a few months, but our cable comes out of Fargo, so we get all the ND news that I pretty much don't pay attention to because I don't live there.  This area of the state is like the bastard child that no one pays attention to until something really bad happens.  But, we have great tourist destinations.

What are they saying about flooding this year in GFK?

Right now they are saying, that because of the new dikes, we shouldn't experience anything.  Who knows in reality.  Currently its predicted to crest at 28 or so feet on Thursday, so thats only minor flooding i think.

Tourist destinations eh?   I may have to hop on my new toy and ride out there to check some out.

Did you get a bike?

Come on up.  Hope you like to fish.  If not, we have a very nice state park, a few good eateries (mostly at the resorts), and an awesome airport.   ;)

Had some days in Jan. and Feb. that were cold enough to suspend flight operations.  I've been doing some flying with students and a smattering of photography ops for the locals.  One of my students has to quit for 3 months because he's opening his lodge for the summer next month and needs to stay up there constantly.

When do you suspend operations?

We cease piston engine ops at -40.   Theoretically turbine ops stop for us at -50, but there's no published limit for the 1900 and it's not in our GOM so they don't have to stop if they don't want to.  The colder it gets the more l ikely a captain is to want to do a single engine turn... leaving the f/o (me!) in the prop wash at the back of the airplane unloading by myself while he guards the controls in the heated cabin.   The idea being worry that the battery might get weak enough sitting for 5 minutes or so at those temps that we could be stuck in the bush

Foggy N Kalifornia has been CAVU (my area) for the last month which sucks for my FiCC (Flying in Crappy Conditions) course that I offer for neophyte instrument pilots---I got a surprising response to the offering---you'd be surprised at the number of instrument pilots who have never really gone out in minimums or been out there when there's a possibility of icing.  It's fun time instructing  ::wave::

I like to stay inside at -20F.  I know the airplane would probably be ok, but if we have a problem, it's a long walk to anywhere at -20.

Jim, that sounds like an interesting course.  How much?

OOPS, sorry but I misssed your reply and question------2 hours on the ground anytime then 3 plus hours in the air (gotta wait for sometimes for NASTY weather over the Sierras) @ 55 bucks an hour (plus the airplane, of course)  Mountain flying in IMC combined.

Airtac is right: she's growing fast and lovelier everyday (or every picture!)! (Remember that when she will be 16 and as cute as a lovely as a pain in the ....).
For her age it seems to me she also looks incredibly conscious of the world around her (but it could also be normal, and my experience with toddlers tooooo many hours below Flight time, that isn't a lot either! :) )!!!!

Post by: spacer on April 12, 2007, 06:46:11 AM
She'll probably have some flight hours behind her long before she can think of getting a car... ;)

I took her to the doc for a checkup today. Besides a bit of diaper rash, she passed with flying colors. Her eyes are developing quite well, and she's up to 7.5 lbs (or 7lbs 8oz).
Yay!
We have to start looking for a bicycle trailer for her, so we can take her on the Big Dam Bridge ride... though we'll have to check with the doc on that. She should be fine by then, though, as it's in Sept (IIRC).

Sweet.  That'll be fun to drag her along on stuff like that.

I did The Ride Across Minnesota for 5 years, and there were always trailers full of kids every year.  I'd like to do that with my kids some day.

Getting Zoe ready for church this evening (well, Zoe and Mrs V... I don't do the whole church thing)
What doesn't come through... I think... is that Mrs V was having to wrestle with Zoe to get her dressed.
And, as you can see, Zoe was in her element.

One year old. Wow... I don't know whether it feels like forever or just yesterday that I was
sitting next to Mrs V's bed, wondering...
We went to Famous Dave's, stuffed ourselves silly on barbeque, and Zoe had a nice devil's food cake,
some of which you can see adorning her face below.

velo, you have a beautiful little girl there.  I'm certain you are proud of her, and for good reason!   ::bow:: ::bow:: ::bow::

My two little ones are now 3.5 years and 20 months.  All I can say to you is this:  It just keeps getting better.  Sure, there are times when you have to be forceful and tell them to eat their broccoli or else, etc.  But as they grow, you can not only watch them develop, you can see the potential of what they are going to be in the future.

It is an awesome thing to observe, and a joy to all parents.

What your baby would tell you if he/she could talk:

1. I have my blankie, you have your caffeine. Enough said.

2. Don't be jealous, but I think I'm in love with the ceiling fan.

3. I know where the remote control is, but it'll cost you.

4. To you, it's just an empty egg carton; to me it's PlayStation 2.

5. Actually, I don't mind sitting in a bathtub that I've peed in.

6. Bang a screwdriver slowly and steadily into your gums. That's what teething feels like.

7. Two words I'd rather not hear from you: rectal thermometer.

8. There's no point in teaching me to say "mama" or "dada." My first word is going to be "hat."

9. I've told you five times what cow says. If you can't remember, I'm not telling you again.

10. There is no question that I can cry longer than you can listen.

11. I'm not just wildly throwing my food. I'm exploring the laws of gravity, estimating mass, and testing wind velocity.

12. If you wanted a good sleeper, you should have gotten a cat.

13. Who that baby in the mirror you keep asking me about?

14. If my bottom is so darn cute, why is someone always trying to cover it up?

15. Who are you two to tell me how important it is to sleep alone?

16. What you secretly believe is true: I am much smarter than other babies.
