Title: Recommendations wanted for a month in California
Post by: Frank N. O. on November 12, 2006, 11:53:00 PM
Hi, I hope it's ok I ask this here.

I've been seriously planning to arrange a trip to California for myself to try at least for once in my life to experience someplace good and imho due to several different factors that'd be somewhere in the state of California. I've seen that for some reason a return ticket is now just 1/3 the price of what it was just a few months ago so now I've started to seriously save up everything I can for a trip.. I haven't bought as much as a small modelcar or a bag of chips or a really cheap DVD movie for weeks now which is a big record.

The thing is that the plane trip will probably be a long and hard one for me depending on if there are noisy children or people wanting to talk to me all the time so I plan on being there a fair time so just for starters I set 1 month, but looking at the cheapest place I could find using the first hotel-finder I could find then it'll be 60 USD/day in a extended stay hotel in Stockton and 1 month of that is almost twice the plane ticket. And then there's the rentalcar that won't be cheap either but I'm not healthy enough for public transportation and most places I want to see are in the deserted countryside where there isn't any rushing traffic and I doubt a citybus drives there anyway  :D

So if anyone has a recommendation for a hotel or whatever it's called where I can get a small room with a shower then that'd be good. I don't need a gym, swimmingpool, microwave oven and other things I've seen listed as std.

A good place to rent a compact sedan would also be nice, I only know of Herz and Avis cars (since they're also here in DK) but what other dependable places are there, and is it true that rental cars have special licenseplates so there's a bigger chance of being robbed by people thinking there are expensive items in the car?

My best friend Chey said I had to go to Yosemity and I do love beautiful scenery so that's a place to consider but are there any other places to visit like museums for instance?

Frank,
Try youth hostels or hostelsclub.com/ ---I saw listings as low as 21 USD per night for a shared room (in San Francisco) I'm sure that is one city you'd like to visit.   Lake Tahoe is also another destination as well as Yosemite and the Redwood Empire where I live (I'd put you up for a night or two if you could stand my dogs)

That's true! Youth hostels (unlike the name would suggest) are open for people of all ages. Usually you have to pay a bit more above a certain age though. In any case, if you plan on staying in a youth hostel, you should maybe become a member of the international youth hostel organization. As a member you get certain discounts. Try it here: http://www.hiayh.org/ or here: http://www.danhostel.dk/ (for Denmark). I recommend making reservations in advance, depending on the season you want to go the hostels sometimes get quite crowded, and, of course, the cheapest ones are full first.

As for public transport: On the west coast, I would suggest not to count on it!! You definitely have to get a car!

If you come to LA, you might want to try Six Flags magic mountain! It's an amusement park with thousands of roller coasters!! I love it!  ;D

I found that Budget rental is usually my best buy in inexpensive cars.  They also will rent to a younger crowd (found that out when I was 22--they were the only ones that would rent to me).  Also book in advance for everything you can--it's generally cheaper.  A quick Orbitz look for cars at say LAX shows prices down around $141 a week for an economy.  (When Tundra and I went to Reno in '99 we didn't go compact--we rented a Durango  ;) )  If you are thinking about going to Tahoe, you might think about hitting Reno as well.  There are some VERY sweet planes at Stead airport.  Tundra could give you more recent info then me, but when we were there in '99 I saw Mig-15s, F-86's, Mig-21s and a lot of other types that were NOT part of the Air Races.  See if you can talk your way into a few hangars....

Hey Phil, isn't Schelville Airport in Cali?

If you do have a car you could drive up the Pacific Coastal highway.  It's a beautiful trip.  There's some lighthouses, the Sea Lion cave, Astoria, Tillamook Air Museum, the Newport aquarium, the Tillamook cheese factories, the Tillamook wineries and lots of other fun stuff!  You'd end up going in to Oregon and possibly Washington, but still a great drive!

What CJ5 says is good, coast drive is beautiful.
CJ5, Shellville airport is 15 miles from my house--you know someone there?

Just steal a car-- it's much cheaper than renting.

NOTE: This suggestion void where prohibited by law.  ;D

naw, but Tundra told me about them and I hit the website once in a while.  Looks like it would be a gas to go there!  'Course I'm a classic and rare plane buff!

Yeah, you would enjoy Schelllville then---there's lots of neat old airplanes in the hangers and plenty of funky characters hanging around willing to shoot the s**t about flying.

As I thought, California sounds like a cool place, and I might be able to get a guest-room at Chey and maybe I can help her at the same time and as long as I can handle that then it would be a pleasure (my mom needs a lot more care, and she's loosing balance and memory so that's a lot more mentally tormenting and stressing for me but at least she's getting countyhelp now so I don't have to worry about her being alone and helpless, not that she ever said I should do that, in fact she stopped my dad on his deathbed making me and Michael (my brother) promise to keep taking care of her, we still do as much as we can though).

I found the airport on Google Earth and it looks like a cool little airport, a lot of parkinglots, taxiways etc.
The winecountry also looks like a fantastic place to see both from the ground and the air.

The budget rental seemed pretty good and I don't mind a Focus sedan, in fact I like it.

Aha, I thought I probably already posted a thread about this and here it is.

There's one thing about the trip I started thiking about, is it still impossible/illegal/dangerous to take onboard and use a laptop computer during a cross-atlantic flight? I don't really know what I'd do without a computer for 10-11 hours (estimated flight time from Heathrow to SF from the BA website), mind you, I also don't know how long batteries on those things last since I don't have a laptop yet.

I don't really know where to set as a base of operations to get the best experience out of the trip but so far I've been checking out SF as well as Stockton where Chey lives.

Ah cool, thank you for the info, although of course I'll doublecheck when I book the tickets, and read every single smallprinted word as well since I've never flown before, apart from the hour in the Cardinal of course but that's hardly the same. Wait a second I just remembered something. According to EU and thanks to the recent terrorist attempts then you're not allowed any carryon and everything remotely liquid has to be emptied in transparent plastic bags that can't be over 0.1L volume, including medicin, shaving-cream etc. and a laptop is quite big but I don't follow the news much so not sure if the passengers has revolted yet (that's what Copenhagen airport is expecting soon since the security checks are getting extreme). I'd completely forgotten about that new restriction they imposed, that could be a problem for me since I'm not going to do well standing/sitting for hours in a noisy airport and that's exactly the waiting time officially warned about due to the new strict security checks. Sigh, who only had a private jet.

Bring a couple of good books.  I believe you are allowed a carry-on, as long as there's no liquid in it and you agree to have it searched or something.  Oh, and you can carry scissors and your nail clipper again.

Yeah, I'm an honorary member of Schellville.  Know someone who used to hang out with that crowd and now I occasionally send them a photo and brief story about some of the working classices up here for their news letter.  Which reminds me, I should send them a link to the Brooks DC-4 info.  It's definitly on my list of must visit places.  Here's a link to the web site.

Winchester house in San Jose

San Jose, San Francisco, San Diego, San Clemente too many saints for me.  They are all to hot, to dry, and not enough trees.

And the last time I was at that house was almost 12 years ago, so I wasn't really sure where is was, just somewhere down there.
The impressions of an 8 year old?

I've not spent much time in San Francisco, San Clemente, or San Jose.  I would not consider San Diego hot and dry, though.  I think the hottest it ever got while I lived in San Diego was around 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius).  As far as dry goes, it doesn't do so frequently, but you will occasionally get drenched by rain.

By the way, if you want to head to San Diego, I suggest Balboa Park.  You have the Zoo, an Imax theatre, a car museum, an aviation museum, ...(Rambling on about the many museums there.)

--  1 hour later  --

...You have a museum about torture devices, there's a flower garden you can walk through, and I think there's some kind of cultural or humanities museum.  Lots to choose from, and we haven't even left Balboa Park.

If you want to go gliding, give the folks at www.skysailing.com a call.  I've sailed there before, and it is a tremendous amount of fun!  Their site hasn't been updated in many years, as far as I can tell, but they're still there.

Did I miss something here?  Im usually pretty good but I get the feeling some one is pulling the feathers over my eyes....
MY MY undatc,
I really enjoy reading the posts on this board and I like remaining quiet but I must say fireflyer has you checked and mated.  What he is too polite to say is that many of the statements you have made are comical if one considers who you are trying to preach to, considering your tender age, brashness, and complete lack of real life experience.  I have been flying as a living since your father was in diapers and have been everywhere in this great country as well as Europe and Africa by light aircraft (yes, baradium Alaska too) and I find your assessment of California to be patently ignorant bordering on genuinely stupid.
I have spent more time on the radio with center then you have been alive (not sure about fireflyer but may be the same) so until you and the Georgia/Alaska genius acquire a little experience why don't you both abide by the old axiom that you can hear better if your mouth is closed.   Don't get me wrong boys, I encourage young people to speak up but be careful your arrogance doesn't get you hurt (baradium actually since YOU cannot get hurt falling over a scope)
And as far as your tree pictures, well, I thought this was a site for aviation humor, I find nothing funny about fallow trees and pictures of snow.
In closing, I wish you both the very best and as ATC and airline wienies, I am sure you will both rise to your individual egos. ::bow::

Wow, I must say, someone appears to be bitter.

Before you presume so know anything about me, or make critical judgments of my analysis of California or anything else, know that I have seen more, and done more in my 20 years on this earth than most people have done in their entire life.  I was the second youngest Eagle Scout in the history of BSA, I started college when I was 15, got my first degree when I was 18, ill have my second by the time I turn 21.  Most likely have a masters by the time I turn 23 if I have my way.  I have set foot on 3 of the 7 continents of the world and 40 of the 50 states.  You name it; I have probably done it at some point or other.  I have interned for state senators, worked on campaigns, worked with severely mentally disabled people, I am a women’s self defense instructor, was a Sus Chef, spent many summers as a life guard, I develop professional web sites for business as a hobby, and tutor elementary school kids amongst other things.  This list could go on for many pages; those are some of the high lights.  I have real world experience, and you may take it as brashness, however its self confidence because I know what I’m talking about, 90% of the time.

You flying since my father in diapers?  I doubt it, my father was born in 1948, maybe you should not make brash statements…

And my assessment of California is right on, according to my experiences there.  I have family that live in Stockton, near where Frank will be staying, and spent many summers there.  It is hot, dry, flat (there are mountains in the distance but plan on waiting several hours to get there due to the horrible traffic) humid, expensive to live, rude people, oh yea and lets talk about one of the nations highest crime rates too.  Beyond the summers I’ve spent, I have toured California many times with a jazz band I was apart of, the winter isn’t much different.  There are parts of California I enjoy, Northern California (where the red woods are and the sequoia’s are) and the San Francisco area is nice.

As far as this forum, I generally thought it was about flying, and living in general.  However you’ve brought to my attention that being diverse and enjoying all aspects of life, including photography of things and places people normally may not look at or see, takes away from this online agenda of yours.  I’ll cease and desist.

Speaking up and asking questions, and making arguments, even if they are wrong is part of learning, coping, and growing.  Something everyone should still be doing, if your idea or information is wrong, if gives other people the chance to correct you.  If you’re right, you spread your own knowledge.  I understand that you may still believe socialism to be a utopian society; however the sharing of knowledge has been the foundation of some of histories greatest discoveries.  It is too bad that all this experience you “have” hasn’t been shared and handed down.

As far as me, I bid you all good bye.  I am not one to start flame wars on message boards; sorry I don’t get my kicks from arguing insistently online, I have a life.

I usually try to stay out of these things and I can't really monitor every thread anyways but I feel compelled to say something here:

(WHY? Because it makes me angry when people erase their posts to change the outcome of the discussion at hand)

undatc:
Who is more bitter here?
One little attack and you get your feelings hurt and pull out of the whole forum because of one person who isn't even a regular poster?
You say good bye to everybody after writing a whole paragraph on how grown up you are and how much world experience you have?
How much "world experience" is that?

And this whole last post is hardly a fair argument anymore ANYWAYS after you erased everything you posted about California ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Can it be you felt a little stupid after the fact and that's why you decided to pull all your posts??
(I know I didn't erase them nor did any of the other moderators)

Now it just looks like Skygal is attacking you for no apparent reason!
... but I happened to see the whole thread this morning and things looked different back then....

Have you not noticed you were talking to people who LIVE in Calfornia and might know a little more than what you saw on your trip with the Jazz-band or in the news??
We're not even talking flight experience yet...

As far as you experience goes:
I admire what you have done in your young life, I really do. I wish there would be more kids out there being interested in so many things...
BUT! You're not the only one in here. I am not going to list everything I have done because it doesn't matter but I have done at least the same as you by the time I was twenty including having gone to war and getting shot at which makes you grow up quickly. I know a few things about North Dakota but I won't talk anybody in or out of it because I know I don't know ebough....

I am well over 30 now and what I am realizing is that I DON"T KNOW ANYTHING YET and that I am NOT RIGHT 90% of the time.
It might still take you 10 years to get there I realize and I am not mad that you think differently still because I was the same way. But I have lost a lot of people I knew and I was friends with because they thought they knew everything already. It's a dangerous situation in aviation I think.
It never hurts to listen to the experienced pilots and aviators even if you think you know a lot already, trust me....

Skygal:
I hope we can go without using words like "weenies" and still get our point across.
Oh, and I like the forum to be humorus as much as well, but it is also about life and sharing so talking about trees, guns ,and funny houses is all good!!

just my $0.02

I DO NOT want this forum to turn into what AOPA or justhelicopters or some of them are !!!  ::banghead::
The original idea was to be different and just laugh and learn !!

Life's too serious as it is.  8)

Hey, this is MOM speaking, and I want all of you to stop feeling sore and just remember how much we DO enjoy everyone on here!!  And I do mean EVERYONE.  I grew up in a town where there were so many more cows than people, and even though we made fun of it when we were little, I learned a VALUABLE LESSON....  each and every person has a UNIQUE perspective to bring to this fun forum, and I think we can all get along, even if we happen to disagree.  People are always more (and sometimes even less) than you think they are!!!!!!

I'm a lot older than some of you, and a lot younger than some of you, and I have some strange ideas sometimes, but I DO enjoy meeting new people, and sharing, and I hope NO ONE will bail or drop out just because, well, we all act human sometimes and get a little sideways to each other.  I think I can say what I feel on here, and I hope to get some teasing and maybe some opposing ideas, and yeah, maybe even some criticism.  Life is all of those things, and sometimes much, much more.

Okay, now finish your homework and get ready for supper, okay?

P.S.  Just finished an interesting flying job that I can't even really tell you much about here -- really -- but it was a GOOD REMINDER of how fortunate we all are to be in aviation, with all its rewards, and challenges, and yes, strong, smart, ambitious individual people.  I'm thankful for it...  I think we all are.   8)

I apologize for the "wienie" remark though, guess you can chalk that one up to a bad day.
I will not admit how old I really am (it's just a number) but in 1948 when your father was born, I had a brand new CAA  (this was before the FAA)  pilots license in the pocket of my jodhpurs and incidently, I still carry a Class II medical and most of my flying is doing tailwheel endorsements.

Jodhpurs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about an article of clothing. For the Indian city, see Jodhpur.

Jodhpurs are tight-fitting trousers that reach to the ankle, where they end in a snug cuff, and are worn primarily for horseback riding. The term can also refer to a type of short riding boot, also called a paddock boot or a jodhpur boot.
