Title: Hail !
Post by: Firegirl on September 24, 2006, 10:40:23 PM
Check this out. Somebody just emailed me this. Looks serious....
These photos are of the BaxGlobal plane that had a run in with 'Alberta Hail' last week...The pilot managed to return and land at the Calgary airport. This damage was inflicted upon the plane 5 minutes into the flight after takeoff from Calgary. After managing to somehow bring the plane to a safe landing, the pilot....I QUIT !!! No kidding , he basically got out of the cockpit and said..." I quit !!!"

Saw these pics the other day. Wild damage for sure. Doesn't hail show up on radar differently then rain? Anyway it could have been avoided? I'm a VFR pilot so not to sure how all the really hi-tech gadgets work (most of the planes I fly are at least as old as I am...some older!).
Actually I am a IFR pilot....I follow Roads, I follow Railroads, I follow Rivers......

Big hail brings the pucker factor up but "I quit" is an untoward reaction to such an anomoly :-\

Yikes! :o I don't know about quitting, but the damage to the co-pilot's windshield would definitly require several stiff drinks! The pilot probably didn't even know about the other damage untill later. Although I'm guessing he lost all radar functions based on the condition of the Radome.
They shoot chickens at windshields, does anyone know if they shoot ice cubes at them too?

The photos seem to be genuine, but I have doubts about the veracity of the story behind it. I've seen these posted elsewhere (and sent directly via email) and the narrative has been different each time. The airplane belongs to Capital Cargo International, and is an ex-American Airlines 727-223 N708AA.
Here is what the airplane looked like a few months ago: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1067141/M/
One thing I find interesting is no record can be found with Transport Canada on this incident (though I haven't researched it to great degree...)
Edit: okay...I'm digging a bit more into it. I just wrote to the Canada Transportation Safety Board for information. I'll post what I find out. Sorry guys...aircraft accident research is what I do!
