Title: 500 Knots Groundspeed
Post by: Rooster Cruiser on March 21, 2012, 01:29:08 AM
So I was flying from Bellingham WA to Chino CA yesterday at FL410 in the Citation Stallion. At times, my tailwind was over 100kts, but it had died down to around 80kts when I was given my descent clearance. Once I started down, my groundspeed readout on the Garmin 500 quickly rose from 460kts to 500kts! It only stayed at 500 for a minute or so, then went back down once we got into thicker air and left the jet stream above us.
I just had to share this with you all. 8)

I've flown that route before . . . but at 110kts and with 3 fuel stops . . . . ;D

groundspeed readout on the Garmin 530 quickly rose from 460kts to 500kts!
Nice... did 565kts straight and level in a former life once---had a 135+kt tailwind.....
These days shit happens WAY too fast at that speed for my liking..... prefer to be able to bring it to a hover and think for a minute... ATC hates when I do that too..... ::whistle:: ::whistle:: ::whistle::

Damn. 3 more knots and you would qualify for this page:

What does that plane true out at in the upper 20s and mid 30s? (it seems that's where most jets get their highest true airpspeeds at). What mach do you normally run?

I am flying a modified Citation 501SP Stallion, which has had the original Pratt and Whitney engines replaced by Williams FJ44's. It has an extra 1000 pounds of thrust, yet burns 30% less fuel over the stock airplane. It trues out at slightly over 400kts around FL 300, but slows to 380kts at FL390, 370kts at FL410, and about 360kts at FL430. Mmo is Mach .72, IIRC. At 410, I was seeing about Mach .67 or so on about 750pph. At 430 my fuel burn is under 700pph or around 100 Gallons per hour. Very fuel efficient for a jet.

We once passed a Phenom, it felt as it was hovering. Ours was an A340, which isn't known as the fastest in the world.
But to be on topic, sometime last year over the atlantic: (http://www.bitsandbytes.ch/data/cw/gs.jpg)
But I do have to admit, fuelflow at this moment was around 5500kg/hr, so about 12125pph...
And Mike is right, photos ::wave::

I will post a pic once I figure out how to reduce the picture size so it will fit onto the forum posts. Mike, you can see some pics of it on my FB page.

Ok, lets see if this works.
Edit: Well they're still coming in pretty big, but better than a stock Jpeg file.
@Busdriver: Nice groundspeed! But yeah, you're burning a helovalot more fuel than I am! You also will not attempt to takeoff or land that A340 on a 3400ft strip like the one I am using! :P

Nice fotos.
That was in an A330, the shortest runway I used until now was Bostons 27, 7000 feet, and that was just for landing :-)

goes a lot faster than it looks!

Busdriver: 478 kts that does not seem that fast... although I will admit that for my longhaul simming I am used to the 747 and the fuel being free...
Matt: I can recommend a nice program called IrfanView. Resizing is a breeze, and you can even have it make it in batches, having the whole folder resized is a question of 5-7 clicks then... I can show you around it if you want.

The boeing 747 is one of the fastest airliners out there, if not the fastest. If you see an overhead view of one to compare to any other airliner, you will see a much higher wing sweep to it. The 747 has more wing sweep than some fighter jets.
I remember hearing a 747-8 on flight tests. We asked the controller what type it was becuase he was asking so many questions. At the time they were doing .90 mach. They said normal cruise would be .89 with highspeed cruise of .92 mach. This is much faster than many other airliners are capable of going.
Also, did you notice he was doing 624 kts over the ground?

Free fuel would be a good thing >:D
We usually fly a Cost Index of 30, or about 9 if the flight time is much shorter than the scheduled block time. If there's a lot of tailwind you can get cruisespeeds, even with a CI of 30 or higher of .79 Don't remember the flight, but in the photo we were probably flying at M.80 or 81, as we were crossing the Atlantic. Normal Cruisemach for the buses is around .81, Boeings are usally a bit faster. I think the A350 will be faster again, I think they do build it for .84 long range cruise.
And as already mentioned, the 747 ist still one of the fastest planes out there.

Also the -8 is capable of very slow flight. I worked a couple of their stall tests during certification, and often times I saw them under 110 knots (ground speed) and still going. That is one impressive beast of a plane.
