Title: Harrison Ford slammed by Hippies!
Post by: Mike on February 26, 2010, 01:42:54 AM
GUYS!

Check this out!  ::unbelieveable:: ::unbelieveable:: ::loony::
I almost see a comic strip in this. I am all for saving the environment but this is going a little too far..... ::banghead::

Since he has done so much for GA I think we should help him out with a good strip. What do you guys think?

Harrison Ford slammed for 'unnecessary' flights

Environmental activists have blasted Harrison Ford for making "unnecessary" trips by air, following revelations he once made a jet journey to buy a cheeseburger.

The "Indiana Jones" star began flying when he was 52. After receiving his license, he went on to purchase several aircraft, which he keeps at Santa Monica Airport in California.

He recently revealed in an interview the extent of his love for piloting, telling Britain's Live magazine, "Learning to fly was a work of art. I'm so passionate about flying I often fly up the coast for a cheeseburger. Flying is like good music; it elevates the spirit and it's an exhilarating freedom."

But the 67-year-old has come under fire from experts at Carbonfootprint.com over the comments, who are outraged he would make an airplane journey for such an "unnecessary" trip.

And Dr. Wendy Buckley, director of the Web site, has called on Ford to set an environmental example and cut back on his flying.

She tells WENN, "Flying is a huge source of carbon emissions and making unnecessary journeys by plane can no longer be seen as responsible to our environment.

"Stars like Harrison Ford need to embrace the huge opportunity to lead by example in the battle against climate change -- reduce their overall lifestyle carbon footprint and carbon offset those unavoidable emissions."

Perfect strip....

He makes trips for more than just cheeseburgers...I gave him Astar lessons in Hawaii, and drank beers with him and Calista in Hawaii... He is extremely passionate about his flying, and is really down to earth---he was even going to help me build a deck on my house....Have pics somewhere....

Ha, haaaa!!

Well, Mike, I think a strip would be in order...  good idea!  He's done lots for aviation...  and like G says, seems like a pretty regular guy.  I know a guy who went through the sim with him in DFW and said he did a fine job!  And that was long ago when he hadn't been flying long at all.    :)

And as for the fine folks getting all riled up over protecting the planet, well, I know they're sincerely trying to get us to see the errors of our wasteful ways, and that's not a bad thing.  Not a bad thing at all!  After all, we all want a decent world to live in, right?

BUT, I also know from personal experience, I could FLY somewhere for lunch every week for the rest of my life, and STILL probably not even come close to using up whatever the hell my "quota" of carbon emissions is!  Why?  Well, because as kids, we never had heated rooms, and every person I KNEW back then simply froze half to death once they stepped away from the stove to go to bed.  People STILL are way too cold in their homes -- lots of them old folks on fixed incomes.  I even bought a thermometer once -- but I had to get rid of it because I didn't like what it said.   ::complaining:

AND, since I was a pathetic student pilot trying to FLY, I never owned a CAR for years -- walking and hitching worked, and I seemed to always get where I was going (well, OKAY, eventually).

So...  the more I think about it, maybe I have a carbon CREDIT...   Hmmmm...   ::thinking::  maybe I'll start taking the Minivan out for a spin every night, just to look at the sunset....     ;)

We just need to keep things in perspective.....   and yeah, I think a strip would be funny!    :D

Well, I really believe we have bigger problems than guys like us and Harrison Ford flying for a Hamburger. Not to mention all the hot gases expelled by all those environmentalists talking crap like that.
My brother rides a bike all over town and I walk pretty much anywhere I can whenever possible. I bet most of these guys still drive their car to the movie theater....

and also, Harrison Ford doesn't fly that much. We maintain his helicopter and it has about 20hrs max on it every year. He does annuals instead of 100hr inspections. Got to fly a few of his toys already. His Bonanza everybody calls "The Millenium Falcon" cause he put so many electronics in it.  ::rofl::
Not sure why he has 3 GPS but I am sure it falls under "because he can"!  ;D

And yes, he has done A LOT for GA! Isn't he the narrater for "16R" as well?

We'll come up with something....

Please do come up with something Mike.  When you do we'll all spread it via email to our friends and lets see if we can all send it to any kind of Fan Club Mr Ford might have.  I think he'll appreciate some support from his fellow pilots in reply to these Tree-Hugging kooks.   |:)\

WOW!! The "greenies" really do get carried away with themselves. They usually end up doing more harm to the environment than good....eg: Unleaded fuel  ::complaining: BTW here is my favorite article on ULP ( http://www.rense.com/health/benzine.htm (http://www.rense.com/health/benzine.htm) )

Anyway, maybe I should stop those flights 120Nm outwest to buy Crownies  ::drinking:: and just drive my car to the local bottle shop  ;)

we have a political party called "The Greens" ... ::thinking:: ...fairly self explanitory, they fight for all things green and it all ends up brown  ::rofl:: (actually the leaders name is Bob Brown  ;D )

OH, and but the way Harrison Ford is one of my all time heros ::bow::, and from what I have read about him and his input and involvment in aviation in the US (Young Eagles program etc)  he should be commended and not condemed, I'm sure it has been taken out of context (yet again  ::sulk::) I see it as Harrisons way of saying "I just wanna fly anywhere for any reason"

::complaining: SO HANDS OFF HIM GREENIES!!!!!

Since the Greens have never heard of "The $100 Hamburger", i.e. an excuse to go fly somewhere, they most certainly will take Ford's statement out of context and slam him for it.

Back in the 1980's when I was just a private pilot working on building up my time, I went flying all throughout southern California in search of the best Bisquit and Gravy that could be found within my airplane's range.  Flo's left something to be desired, but I decided that the best B&G could be found at Fox Field in Lancaster.  This was my version of the $100 Hamburger.

... But if you told the Greens this their eyes would simply glaze over.  It doesn't fit their mindset, so they will reject the logic out of hand and screech even louder.  Since their screeching received a reply, they'll continue screeching even more.  Quite childish.   ::banghead:: ::rambo::

Best antidote for them is to ridicule them with some good humor in a CW cartoon.  Give 'em a broadside, Mike and Stef!   |:)\

Plus, I think eating hamburgers actually helps the environment. Dead cows don't emit methane (which is way worse than  CO2), do they?

Nope, 16R doesn't have one (which you don't realise until someone points it out)

He has narrated/done a few other aviation shows though, I saw one about the Beaver and he was on it.

The character of Han Solo changed my life forever, and no other actor I've seen could have replaced Mr. Ford in that role ::bow:: (Han shot first).  He's been kind of a role model of mine, knowing the back story of how he got into film and how he got cast as Han Solo let's you appreciate his character (self-reliant, hard-working). True environmentalists (read outdoorsmen) understand that carbon dioxide does not contribute to a greenhouse effect that warms the planet.  I'll tell you what warms the planet, the sun.  Don't believe me? let's just try and go a day without it.  Greenies are earthbound, concrete-walkin, city-slicker, busy-bodies that want to tell you how to live your life, and use "green" habits to replace their lack of religion.  Besides we have a great cooling system, it's called the ocean.  The greater the temperature -> the faster the lapse rate -> the more cloud cover -> reflects more sunshine -> less radiation absorbed by the surface of the earth -> cooler, more stable air masses.  If we were to feed the trees by putting more CO2 in the air, we'd all be happier, because O2 makes us happy? Oxygen bar anyone?

But what do I know, I'm just a country boy! ::cowboy::

You would be even more impressed after you meet Harrison.

He is a great guy, loves talking shop and flying but hates talking about movies (in fact you bring up movies, he'll just turn around, walk away, and find somebody else to talk flying with....)
I have been to movie sets with him. He still remembers where he came from and never ever complains when he is working with the director. I've seen him do the same scene close to 30 times (other actress screwed up but she was the directors wife) and he said he can do this all night because it still isn't real work for what he gets paid for. Really impressed me since some of the other Hollywood actors I've worked with are not like that at all.....
He is more one of us then one of "them".....

That would be a dream come true to meet him.  He'd probably think it a little silly that someone would hold him in such high regard, all the more reason he's just that awesome.

Agree 100%...Went to dinner with him & Calista after we flew in Hawaii---he has zero interest in talking movies. The next day we had some friendly banter on the radio...and he loves it...

He was due to go flying with me in the afternoon, I was taking off in an Astar mid morning and heard him coming in on downwind in a cessna.

The tower controller warned me -- "Island 3, you have traffic 10 o' clock on down wind".

I replied "Island 3 has target in sight, switching to guns".. (as one does.. ::whistle::)

Harrison came back with "Gordy, I am NOT a target, besides I would win"

The controller then asked "Island 3 and Cessna 123, do you guys know each other"...to which Harrison jumped in and said...

"We know each other---but do YOU know who I am----this is Harrison"

To this day, the controllers at Lihue talk about the exchange.......Harrison is a true gentleman who knows his roots. He would always come by our office and hang there while his Plane was being serviced...he just lives and breathes aviation---and woodworking of all things---he was going to help me build a deck on my house in Hawaii...he suggested we have a big bar-b-que for all the pilots and build the deck---kind of like a "barn raising"...he just wanted to hang with pilots. He got called back to the main land early so it never happened

When we flew around Kauai with Calista, where the Indiana Jones move was filmed, he had no interest in showing her the ;locations from that movie, but did want to go to all the locations of "Six days seven nights"...which I thought was an inferior movie.... Maybe that is indicative of how he feels about the Jones movies.

Harrison Ford to chair Cessna 2010 Special Olympics Airlift

October 6, 2008
Business Aviation, Business Aviation Lifestyle

At a press conference here yesterday, actor/pilot Harrison Ford accepted the appointment of honorary chairman of Cessna’s 2010 Special Olympics Airlift.
“It is an opportunity for the athletes, an opportunity for Cessna to demonstrate their community-minded approach, and an opportunity for all of us in aviation to do something positive and high-profile to promote aviation at a time when aviation faces some difficulties,”  Ford said.

Cessna is seeking volunteers to transport some 2,000 athletes to the next Special Olympics, which will be held July 17 to 24, 2010, in Lincoln, Neb. The company would like to secure at least 325 Citations to support the effort.

Cessna began transporting Special Olympics athletes and coaches in 1985 with two company aircraft. Since then, the airlift has grown to a volunteer effort that includes hundreds of Citation owners who make their aircraft and crews available to provide Special Olympians and their coaches and sponsors with transportation to the International and National Special Olympics Games. In 2006, 235 Citations transported 1,500 athletes and coaches to the Games in Des Moines, Iowa.

“The Citation Special Olympics Airlift is a unique event that brings together the general aviation community to carry out the largest peacetime airlift in the world,” Ford said.

The Special Olympics were created in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver for people with intellectual disabilities.

Owners wishing to donate use of their aircraft for the event are encouraged to register online at www.airlift.cessna.com.

Well, if he's going to be a member, let me get my Harrison Ford movie talk out of the way.

Never saw 40 Days 40 Nights. I only wanted to see the plane, anyway.

I have my Lego A-Wing. I don't need Star Wars anymore.

There was that weird movie with Rutger Hauer and that half-naked chick with the raccoon-eye face paint...

I don't even think I saw all of the Indiana Jones movies. Crystal Skull was better than I expected, but I wasn't expecting much. I still think they should have stuck with puppets, though. I haven't been so impressed with Industrial Light and Magic's CGI work. Also, I never could tell what kind of jets those were that flew over the field early on in the movie. I suspect F-86, but I haven't cared to pay much attention. It was really cool that they payed homage to the guy who helped develop the ejection seat, though. Well, not so much the man, but the test. That jet-sled was a real thing. Hold on, let me look up his name real fast. I should know it, anyway.

Well, no such luck so far. I need to spend more time studying for finals. I'll see if someone else has found out about who that is later.

Speaking of which, was that airplane in Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark real, or just something made up so some Nazi could get splatted by a spinning propeller?

Yeah, I think that about covers it for Harrison Ford movie talk for me. Notice my biggest tangents were aviation related within the movies? That wasn't even intentional. I just gravitate toward those parts of the movies.
