Ukraine snares radioactive coffee shop chopper

KIEV (AFP) - A plan to smuggle a highly radioactive helicopter from the site of the world's worst nuclear accident and turn it into a cafe has been foiled in Ukraine, police said Friday.

Suspects were detained on Thursday carrying scrap 20-30 times the legal radiation level from the 30-kilometer (18-mile) exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power station, which exploded in 1986, police said in a statement.

The criminals "tried to take an Mi-8 helicopter out of exclusion zone to use it as an original coffee shop in one of Ukraine's cities," read the statement from the elite SBU special services.

A workhorse of the Soviet armed forces, the Mi-8 helicopter is capable of carrying up to 28 people in its normal configuration, although it's not clear how many customers the gang had been hoping to seat.

Wouldn't even have to turn the stove on to boil the water. Just place it on the airframe, and the water would boil instantly.

Interesting story though...

might be more of a problem in coming years as some areas are being deemed safe and people get closer and closer.

I faintly recall reading about people living relativly close to the ruins of the reactor. They enjoy the untouched nature and wildlife over there, including hunting / eating some of it.
I'm not quite sure that's a good idea, glowing in the dark might be fun, but I doubt they've got enough time to appreciate it . . .

I've always wanted to do something like that with my house (If I ever get one) put an aircraft inside. A derelict DHC Beaver on floats would be best, but I'm more pragmatic. I could probably get a T-33 for about $10-$15 g's, so that would be kewl too! |:)\ |:)\ |:)\

Ho, that fuselage was seconds away from being shredded for scrap....  no way was it going to survive...  and that jumper loved it so much, he scraped up the money to delay the moment of doom...  he finally arranged to buy it, and moved it across from the airpot...  many people stop to look at the old thing now and he still hopes to make it into an art display / house.....  he does wonderful paintings of DC-3s....

I'd say he rescued the old girl in the nick of time.  And I'd dare say she loves him for it.   |:)\

Well, that's one use for a Sea King that I hadn't thought of.  Just what I need.  Peruse a rental site and navigate a video game at the same time!
