Title: Interesting Videos
Post by: Frank N. O. on March 04, 2006, 02:22:51 AM
I thought I'd allow myself to post a thread for videos even though some have already been posted in the picture-thread (that reminds me, who were the military helicopter pilots with that Super Puma(?) ? )

I was looking around and found an insane skydiver! Flyingblind have you or your friends ever done something like this? :D
Warning, pop-ups when you open the window unless you have a blocker.
http://www.jokaroo.com/extremevideos/insane_skydiver.html
I was really worried he's get sliced and diced by the prop.

And another one with the theme of flying low! Is it just me or do they sound dutch or something like that?
That last one was insane!! As if the first two wasn't.

That was on the show "Stunt Junkies" or something like that.  That was the guys second try.  The first time he couldn't grab onto the strut like he wanted to and almost went past the airplane.

I noticed that site also has the video of the "Great French Lawnmower."  Has everyone seen that?

It's been done so much there's actually a name for it? Wow! Thanks for the info, I was sure you'd know something about it, and I agree with Mike, you guys/gals really are a different breed, my respect!

I tried looking thrue the site but I couldn't find the lawnmower clip, can you get a direct link perhaps? The thread's here for the same :)

And speaking of: Have you seen this video? Does anyone know that there's been a music-video recorded entirely during actual skydiving and not just skydiving but the skydiving bandmemberes were also dressed up, holding props and singing during it thanks to excellent skydiver camerawork!

This was one of the first Airbuses (Airbusi?) to be bought by Air France.  I forget if it was the A319 or 320.  If I remember right, there were 7 people on the plane.

Can you spell Boeing?

Ah that one, yes I saw that years ago on tv, was it really computer-controlled as the site-text says?

Btw, I understand the idea with yout own photo for your avatar and nothing wrong with a Caravan in my oppinion, I just followed Mike's comment which I'd thought of as well (in relation to the posts in the other thread).

This actually reminds me of a joke! Its originally in Estonian..but ill try to translate...

*Bling Blong*
Welcome to the first computer controlled airplane designed by man...
Nothing can go wrong .... nothing can go wrong .... nothing can go wrong... nothing can go wrong

LOL, perfect translation, I understand it completely! And might I add: Hey someone go up to the cockpit and push the nedle! (I really hope at least one person understands that joke otherwise I'd feel sooo old hehe).

And the skydiving music video, first ever of it's kind, directed by Lars von Trier btw.

From what I heard after the crash, the pilots pushed the go-around button and advanced the throttles, but the computers didn't allow the engines to spool up, even though the plane was configured for a go-around.  The autopilot held that altitude all the way into the trees.

Thanks for the kudos, Frank and Mike.  Just wish Airliners.net had better pictures of airplanes in flight.  Gulfstream.com wants to e-mail their pictures to you, rather than just having them available for download.   :(

You did good!

You got it going on now man! Picture matches the name, and a great signature!
(the signature doesn't appear aviation related at first but if one takes a closer look, one will
find that this applies to every pilot out there...heh heh)

Got the signature from Bruce Almighty.  I should probably put that in there...Wouldn't want people to think I'm clever enough to think that up on my own.   ;)

Wow that was indeed wild. That simulator-test was quite funny, but of course only because it was a simulator! Shutting off the good engine when the other one is on fire! I love the line "Don't worry you won't brake anything". It looked to me like student-pilots at the beginning of their training, what do you think? They sure laughed at the poor guy. That wave-takeoff was scary as heck!! :o Incredible that the plane made it! The A380 video was hilarious however! :D
The Tomcat refueling was horrible, not a fun thing to happend, wasn't there a big risk of explosion there?
Have you seen the video with the large helicopter lining up for refueling and it gets too high and the pilots tilts the rotor so much it cuts off the fuel-pipe? Shows how strong the rotors are I guess since they didn't seem to be damaged, the pilot's spirits however....

WOW!!!!!!!  :o :o :o Now that is what I call a real flying demonstration, even if it's actually very simple once you think about it, the test-pilot of the 707 did made a roll with in a demo flight as well and while he said it was a simple 1 g manouvre then it shocked the potentional customers looking at it.

That video is fantastic, thank you so much for sharing the link to it! I must say that after seeing him it made me even more sure of what was posted here earlier that glider-flying might be a very good thing to learn before flying a powered plane to learn to truly utilize what can be done. Mother Nature, gotta love her :)

Btw, is that plane what I think it is? The twin-engine Rockwell Aero Commander?

Yep.  I don't think he beefed it up at all, either.  Coud be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's still in the normal category.
Title: Re: Interesting Videos
Post by: fireflyr on March 14, 2006, 03:33:30 AM

Gulfstream, you;re right, the Shrike that Hoover was flying was absolutely stock.   Twin commanders were built to withstand 4.5 Gs, that's one of the reasons I love flying them.    Of course, ONLY Bob Hoover could do the stuff depicted.  I was lucky enough to see him perform in 1987 (I think) at Hamilton AFB at an airshow--a real jaw dropping experience and one that humbled even the best aerobatic pilots.   Chuck Yeager is quoted somewhere saying that Bob Hoover is the best pilot he had ever met or seen.

Incidently, one of Hoovers show Shrikes is now owned by Ponderosa Aviation in Arizona where it flies on as an Air Attack platform, it's done up in Ponderosa livery of white and burgandy--can't recall the N number.

Post by: Mike on March 14, 2006, 05:00:24 AM
You know what guys?

I saw Bob Hoover today !!!
I was letting this older gentlemen through the gate cause he was seeing somebody at the airport. He looked familiar but I couldn't put my finger on where I could have met him before.
Later somebody said "Did you know who that was!!!??? :o"
And I was like "Uhmm...no...but he looks familiar"
And he said "That was Bob Hoover man!"
Can that be???

I am bummed I didn't see that video a day earlier. It would have been fresh in my mind and I could have asked him for an autograph. That's what you get for spending most of your time in sling wing aviation and not keeping up with the stuck wing world....
Title: Re: Interesting Videos
Post by: Frank N. O. on March 14, 2006, 05:41:53 AM
What a bummer! But at least you saw him and that can be just as good as an autograph at least in my mind. I don't suppose there's an equivalent in the sling-wing world of Bob Hoover is there?

I know there's gotta be a lot of learning to understand how Bob Hoover does that even if it might be sound aerodynamics and physics as well as understanding your plane and having a plane that fits you, but I remembered a trio of developers had made a series of Commanders for FS2004 that had won a lot of awards for extreme detail and accurace so I went looking for it and guess what, at www.avsim.com it said: Now you can be Bob Hoover with the freeware Shrike. And when I installed it and ran FS2004 the second of the three std. liveries was called Bob Hoover :D I'm enclosing a 25% screenshot of my engine-off glide over the runway at SF Intl. It actually handled nicely but only if you didn't apply full back-pressure but then again high-speed stalling is a bit like sliding with a car right? You can't apply full steering in high-speed situations, you have to find the limit and stay within it right?

Btw speaking of the real Shrike, the yoke on the simulated one only turned about 40 degrees from center whereas I know real Cessnas rotate a full 90 degree, is that authentic? (I know these are trivial questions but I'm thinking of making a sim-yoke and I want to have correct movement range).

Btw speaking of videos, did anyone want to see the nutter flying under the Eiffel Tower?

Frank

Hehe! It's got a funny red nose!  :D

Seriously, for all you may say, this is a really impressive bird!! 8) I've seen a documentary about it. They said they had to develop a whole lot of new technologies and processes in order to be able to build this thing, e.g. welding techniques (well, building was not the major challenge, but building AND make it light, i.e. economically feasible enough was). I still wonder that it pays to transport the parts over all of Europe... But well, that's European cooperation for you, everybody needs a share of the work...

Btw, that's typical of the news that CNN article above, actually the test was a success and in a real life situation hundreds of lives could be saved, but they headlined some minor injuries. Of course for a test with no real danger it was too bad there were injuries, but if it was the real thing and that was all the injuries then I think you all will agree the plane design worked well. That title vs the content sadly further confirms what you guys replied about the 60 minutes whistleblower segment, that the media is so interested in ratings that they will give misleading information to get ratings regardless if it will create real-life probelms :(

Title: Re: Interesting Videos
Post by: Gulfstream Driver on March 27, 2006, 07:07:14 PM
I guess I would expect injuries in an actual emergency, but not in a controlled environment, in a hangar.  No fire, no emergency at all.  Just some "debris" in the aisles.  Even though it passed the test, I still don't think I'd want to get on one of those things.  Getting off the top deck in an emergency would be like jumping off a 3 story building.  There are too many people and too many things can go wrong.

You are right about the headline.  It was used to grab attention.  But, what the article doesn't say is that in an Asian configuration they would need to get 1000 people off that thing in the same amount of time.  1000 PEOPLE!!!!  That's a lot.  Does anyone know if they've done evacuations in this configuration?

It says it's made by the makers of the Simpsons, but how come it's a RHD Volvo and a old Lada, both not US-market cars? Otherwise I say it's really well-done, even down to the photo-effects of the skate-board over the car and the effect with view going thrue the class-room window that is recreating the look in the cartoon that's most likely done with a simple effect to mimic a real pan but simplified for technical reasons, but to replicate that in real life they need to digitally synch two different camera-recordings since while it gets the message thrue for a cartoon then in real life it'll look much differently, but they did even that detail for the live-action intro, well done :)

I also noticed a headline saying they are continuing the show for several more seasons, wild, that's one show-record that's not going to be surpassed anytime soon, even if they started to try now lol.

That is one wild take-off and no offence but it looked like the plane was almost near stalling since he/she imidietly levelled out very close to the roof of the off-roader after the initial lift-off, or maybe that was planned? The two firetrucks in the back sure seemed to indicate there existed some worry. But on a related topic, have you guys seen someone trying to land on the roof of a road-train while on the move? Not sure if that clip is online but that was kind-of nuts too, even if it was a much smaller plane, maybe a Cub. Speaking of a Cub I saw an online clip once with someone landing one near his friends in barely a car-length when it finally touched the ground!

But I hear if you go see Ice Age 2, you can see Homer on the big screen in all his yellow glory...They play the teaser trailer in one of the many previews of Ice Age. The trailer is like 30 seconds, so it's not worth spending the $9 for a ticket to Ice Age... that's what my girlfriend says anyway... We'll see about that. I'd say we need a animated jaw-drop smilie and I think one was in the collection I emailed Stef last week so just wait a short while.

About the display: Thank god the cold war is over! I know there are still not the best feelings, at least on the political level, but still. I know the F-22 whatever-name-it-has-now (I have three so far) might have a hidden and visible aircraft stealth/radar team-play but that kind of manouvreability is out of this world. Even with computers isn't it correct that the pilot also has to have some skill? That plane must also have some extreme strength to handle those manouvres I think.

Thanks for the video :)

it shows the impressibe level of aerodynamics it has. it does have fly-by-wire, and trust-vectoring including side-to-side moving capability (wich the F-22 doesn't have) but what's impressive is the engines. I read they have to be very strong to keep working at that high AOA levels (for example, the MIG-29 and the SU family are the only operational planes that can make a cobra, which is the fast-stopping maneouver you see in the video when the a/c goes vertical without climbing). add to this a great pilot and that's what you get
Title: Re: Interesting Videos
Post by: Gulfstream Driver on April 19, 2006, 05:55:18 PM
You also need a very strong pilot (or a very fat one :) ).  I think they guy that invented the Cobra maneuver blacked out while he was doing it.  I can't remember the numbers exactly, but I think that's at least a 9G maneuver.

The thing doesn’t really fly more like the engines just send it places in the sky. I think the plane could have the drag coefficient of a school bus and still do the same maneuvers!  ;D

Very cool vid! Thanks!!!

You know, McDonnel-Douglas proved you could make anything fly if you put a big enough engine on it.

Speaking of anything flying, am I the only one that wasn't that happy to see the cargo the AS350 decided to give a spin? Mike is that the same as Jane? I think the speaker said it has a 420hp Allisson turbine (I can't remember what thread you wrote about Jane so I thought it might be faster to get you to say it again).
Isn't it also a bit fast to fly with the wire hanging so far out or am I overly nervous?

I think you're overly nervous. We go up to 70kts with the longline and it looks more exciting from the ground when you see us go into a turn with the bucket. That was nice flying the way he brought in his "load" right into the trailer, they do this a lot in the swiss alps (they also fly out a lot of dead horses and cows out of the mountains).
It's kind of the same work I do. I have been flying the bucket on a 50ft and sometimes 100ft line for the last 4 weeks here in Arkansas.

As for the type, it's an AS350B3, the bigger brother of the B2 I am flying but the same airframe, just bigger engine (Turbomeca by the way, not Allison). I can't remember the exact horsepower but it's almost 1000hp (I think 890 or so, but I am sure somebody will find out the correct number, fact is I never look at the HP, only at what it can lift at a certain altitdue....)
I used to fly the B3 and LOVE it! It's the best light single engine helicopter in my mind (in my little world where I am god and everybody loves me) and it flies circles around it's competitor the Bell 407 out here at fires....

Here is a picture of me lifting a 1000lbs bridge part to 10,000ft in Elko, Nevada with a B3 in 2003.
(it's a pretty awesome machine...but I am repeating myself)

It actually looks like that cow had a really nice flight, though I don't know that a helicopter would be the best way to move a cow 200 ft.   :D

If you think about it, the cow has to swing out like that through a corner because of inertia.  If the load was always perpindicular to the ground, it would be impossible for the pilot to keep the turn coordinated.  The load was always perpindicular to the main rotor, which is where it should be.

That always amazes me. How you guys (helo pilots that is) can fly with something hanging on such a long line!  :o
A few months ago there was an A/C unit going on the roof of one of the office buildings near where I work. It was pretty cool to watch, but I didn't think of grabbing a camera  :-[ D'OH!

You can tell that air show was not in the US. (you know, other than it’s not in English) No way the P.E.T.A. wackos would have let some cow be hauled around for entertainment purposes  ;D

I guess I took a game too far. In Search and Rescue I got a warning for flying with the wire down too fast (no manual so I had to test around to find the controls). About the landing then I was almost worried that there was going to be an accident when the wire came right up the roof of the trailer when they were offloading the cow but maybe it is possible to maneuver that precisely in an AS350? Sounds like you miss your B3, I hope you can get to flying one again and in the meantime that the B2 isn't that bad, btw I'd still like some more pictures of Jane if possible.

Does anyone know if the Tunderbirds will be getting new planes next year?  The F-16 is supposed to be decommisioned in '07.  Hope they don't get stuck with Predators or something.

Wow thanks for the link, I didn't know they had such a video! I didn't know the Thunderbirds had existed for that long either, nor that they actually used a Double Ugly at one time, what a truck to do displayes with!  :o 8) |:)\

Predator? That was a joke right since it's unmanned. The only other predator fighter I found was one from a japanese cartoon that looked a bit like a Berkut, not bad looking though.

Yeah, that was a joke.  The Air National Guard here in Fargo are getting their F-16's taken away next year.  After that, they'll be flying Predators out of Grand Forks with "operators" in Fargo.  We won't have a fighter presence in ND or MN anymore; the closest ones will be in WI.  Many of the pilots here are looking to move to units with manned airplanes.

During the last BRAC round, they threatened to close Ellsworth AFB in SD, the 119th ANG Wing in Fargo, and wanted to move all of the nations KC-135's to one east coast location.  That would have meant reducing the size of the Grand Forks AFB and giving them a small number of UAV'sl.  I'm not sure why they thought having all of the tankers in one place was a good idea.  Luckily, the citizens of ND and SD were able to convince the BRAC to keep Ellsworth and Grand Forks open, and actually Grand Forks got the UAV's as well.

I'm not sure how they're going to deal with unmanned vehicles using the same airspace as GA aircraft, including UND's students.  ATC will probably figure that out when they get conflict circles for the first time.

I've watched that a couple of times now.  I would think that Frank's right about making maneuvers that overstressed the plane, and eventually the wings just couldn't hold the weight of the airplane anymore.  Looks like the tail got overstressed, too.

Monty Python so rules! LOL

The Sunday Bloody Sunday mix is fantastic, great song but sadly based on very sad events if I remember my history lessons :(

That Pepsi and Mentos thing looks crazy, but knowing some chemistry as well as having an exam in it then I won't say it's faked, I'm sure some of the carbon-ingredients in both items could cause big reactions, and a nice choreography too!

OMG! Thunderbolts and lightnings are really very very frightening, mama mia! That first one seemed extremely close and the second one from the cockpit almost unreal! No-one was hurt right? I read that composite planes are getting wires woven in since they can't transfer lightning like metal-body planes can so they are in the danger-zone while the metal-ones aren't as much.

I must say the video of the X-Games dude that did a perfect dual backwards flip on a dirt-bike indoors was a fantastic sight, and such a great landing too!

For parachute videos I prefer Laid Back's music-video "Bakerman", I think I gave the link to that some months ago, really nice footage and fun looking too. Must've taken a long time to plan and train for and required some pro's to help with filming and coaching.

The first one has an ID problem. The second one is very good, and what a beauty, the female pilot as well as the flying machines. Is she russian? Not to be stereotypical (and certainly not offensive!) but she has some (beautiful) facial features that reminds of some women from that part of the world. Who were the pilots flying anyway? At the end of the video it said is was a FAI World Grand Prix although the location looked to be northern asia, perhaps Mongolia?

It's amazing to compare the face expression of the male and female pilots : the guy looks like stressed, anxious, with quick movements, the beautiful (russsian ?) girl is well concentrated on her action and has no changing expression on the face !

The flights are absolutely awesome ! It can't be done in western Europe with all of our rules (no below 1000ft, depending of your speed, no obstacles ... when you see the sukhoi at few meters of ground, passing between light pylons in dyssimetric flight !! Waouw !

Sounds like you're referring to this one:

One time, an Air force General, an Army General, a Navy Admiral, and a Marine General met in a bar with a few of their constituents in tow.

The four gentleman had a few drinks, and the topic of bravery in the troops came up.

It just so happened, and enemy tank was spotted coming down the road in front of a bar.  The Air Force general chimed in first:

"Hah!  My airmen are so brave, I'll send 'em to stop that tank!"
He barked an order, and several of the airmen ran out in front of the tank, trying to stop it.  They all got run over.

The Navy Admiral was next:
"Nice show, zoomy.  Watch how it's done by an old pro!"  He barked at his seamen, and off they went, ending up the same way.

The Army General, not wanting to be shown up, make a comment about "the old Army", and promptly sent his men after the tank.  The results were no better.

All of the top brass finally turned to the Marine General.  Silently, he took one last drag from his beer, and shouted, "Private Smuck, front and center!"  A skinny private came running up and snapped to attention in front of the General.  "Son, you think you're more brave than any Air Force, Army, or Navy man?"
"Yes sir!" replied the private.
"Then I order you, alone, to go out and stop that tank!"

Without a word, the private ran out the door, but stopped cold as soon as the door swung shut.  He immediately turned back, opened the door and shouted, "*#&$ you, sir!"

Normally I don't like self promotion, but this is a video I made from my T-6 ride a couple years ago.  I don't believe I've posted it here yet.  I had a perma-grin for the next week :P

Check this out guys!

The SoccerMom sent this to me in an email but I just HAD to share this!
I hope it's not in another thread already....

This is really a doozey.

A CJ2 with a landing weight of 11,000 pounds requires 2,930 feet of landing distance, in a no wind situation. With a 10 knot tailwind, which was the approx wind at the time of the accident, the airplane required 3,500 feet of landing distance. Runway 11 at Bader Field is a 2,948 foot-long, 100 foot-wide, asphalt runway. Then the pilot touches down 2/3 of the way down the runway.

You all REALLY want to watch this!  Don't give up after the first part where the plane runs off the end of the runway into the water....the best part is yet to come.

Good Lord!!!!!!

Did it turn out somebody was in it?  Or did the water cause some electronic malfunction that caused that????

Ah yes OY-JET yes we've talked about this already. Really a bad promotion for danish pilot skills (it was his own plane and he just had a PPL).

Ah yes, another sad case of more money than brains. :(
Very curious about the engine though.  Maybe the auto pilot kicked in and was trying to reach altitude.  ???

Sorta like why V tail Bonanza's got a bad rep...too many doctors with more money then flight time buying them and making an expensive hole in the ground....

How did he get insurance after that, I wonder? Or not be grounded after being that stupid, not to mention lying about the brakes, etc.? Maybehe has a hired pilot with common sense fly for him now!

The Sovereign is a much bigger jet that requires a crew of 2... So probably he either just rides in the back now or at least has another pilot up front to try to keep him out of trouble.

The explanation given for the engine on the other site was that when you turn on the ignitors on that particular jet if an engine fails the starter will spin the engine up to automatically attempt a restart.  After the mishap, he forgot to shut off the master and the system managed to get #2 restarted.  I imagine it started injesting water is why it failed the second time.

For whatever reason, I get audio but no video with that.  Must be using a codec I haven't downloaded to the laptop yet.

So what kind of file is it?

It's Fat Albert (the Blue Angel's support C-130) making a Jato Takeoff to some AC-DC music at Arctic Thunder 2004.  It's a fun vid if it shows up.  Put file has been giving me trouble lately

I had the same problem, hit the "refresh" or "reload" button and it worked fine for me after that.

Didn't watch the video, but there is a group with 3 airframes.  Two standard and one is the only trainer version of the 262 built.   They were refitting them with a modern GE turbofan (original engines did good to last 100 hours) that would provide modern reliability and fuel efficiency.   Last I heard they were planning on selling two of them and keeping the 3rd.... asking price was going to be well above my price range is all I remember about it.... something for a really rich guy with a lot of money to burn who wants a really special warbird.  ;)

And whoever buys it will probably some guy with little to no experience and just want to flaunt cash.  So we'll never hear about the plan until he crashes it one day.

http://www.stormbirds.com/

Is that the site you got it off Mike?

There is also an outfit building new Focke Wulfe 190's.  They have some original parts and are manufacturing the rest.  I understand that they are so authentic that what ever governmental body in Germany decides such things is assigning them consecutive serial numbers with the original Focke Wulfe production series.

Half or more of this sight is in German so my understanding is incomplete but some nice pics!

You are right, they borrowed an original 2 place trainer from the Navy, dismantled , reverse engineered , and restored it to get templates for the manufacture of new ones which they equipped with modern engines which were made to look like the originals inside the stock cowlings---pretty interesting stuff and veeeeery expensive!   Somewhat out of my financial capabilities also.  :(

Seen a couple of documentaries about them and from the comments of both German and American pilots I believe they were.

From what i recall reading, ME-262's were a bit touchy below 200 kts but after that, they were a joy to fly. Willie Messershmitt was one of those rare aircraft designers like Jack Northrup and Kelly Johnson who could almost "see" air.
