Title: Where's your closest airport
Post by: airtac on February 28, 2008, 02:49:05 PM
As I fly around the country ferrying airplanes, I've wondered if maybe there's a CW member anywhere close, how about we post the nearest airport to our home?
It may (or may not) be kind of neat to meet other CW fans if we're in the vicinity.
I'll start with mine, it's Santa Rosa CA.  (KSTS)--Go to North Coast Aviation, ask for Jim Thiessen or call 707-486-3047--(so much for anonymity)
I'd like to meet some of you. ::wave::

Ahhh Yes... KSTS... That was my first towered airport. I did my initial flight training just up the mountain at Angwin (2O3).  ;D The first time I soloed to STS tower told me to taxi in to position and hold... I had no idea what that meant, and since there was still an aircraft on the runway, I just stayed on the taxiway  :D. I think tower was a bit annoyed with me because she had to tell me again, but then I figured it out. Other than that it was a good first solo to towered airport ;D. Man! I miss the Napa Valley area. Do they still have a Japanese flight training school in the area? Can't remember if it was based at Napa or Santa Rosa - but I remember some pretty interesting radio calls some times :).

Lakloey Air Park (AK22), I live about 50 ft from the runway.  8)  It's just a couple miles East of Ladd Field on Ft. Wainwright Army Base near Fairbanks Alaska.

I guess PAFA, Fairbanks International, would be the most appropriate here.  I don't know which airport would come up if I used closest straight line... and there will be a seaplane base or two between here and International...

Oh yeah... the original question! I work at C20, but in MI, there's about 5-6 airports within 20 mi., not counting all the private airstrips. SBN is the closest airport with scheduled airline opps. BEH is the base for all of Whirlpool's flights - both about 15 miles from here.

Mike, when I arrived there, the first thing that came to mind is that Ely and ugly are similar in pronunciation.............. ::thinking::

There was some guy coming and going all summer in a C185, who, every time he arrived had a different ugly woman with him, I thought maybe he just had bad taste in women till I found out they were floozy recruits for his cathouse (NO Mary, not the feline type)

I will say though, Wheeler Peak (60 miles East) was an excellent place to hike, and trout fishing was excellent, especially when I went with Terry. |:)\

And speaking of Ely AND ugly----------Is that guy Dan still the airport manager?-----------

Hey hey, Daddy Airtac!!  Easy there, big fella!!!  Ely may be UGLY, but show me part of Nevada that AIN'T.....!!!!??!!!?

I love working out of there....  it beats a lot of other sub-bases for what we do!  They leave you alone, the dispatch is great, they actually know something about FIRE.....   and yeah, even the old drunk blind guys say hello to me because they think I'm REALLY a "working girrrrrrl".....  HAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!   ::bow::

Ahhh, ya gotta love Nevada......    ;)   :D

P.S.  Besides, where else can you drink 10 beers just during the hotel check-in??!??    ::whistle::    ::drinking::    ::loony::
Try that in UTAH and they'll run your ass down to the Temple for some serious brainwashing..........   ::rambo::
Title: Re: Where's your closest airport
Post by: Mike on March 01, 2008, 05:06:00 AM
well, I wouldn't say their dispatch knows much about fire since they always send engines before us or the jumpers
(go figure, the whole district has 2 paved roads....  ::loony:: )

BUT

I kinda like it there. Just like you said mom, lots better than other FOB's.

Jim, I think they have a new manager there since last year. . . .  just as ugly though . . .  ;D

You're right, Mister S., but I was thinking in relative terms.....  I try not to think of the dispatch offices I used to know....  where every single person in the room was a ground firefighter first.....  alas.  You know....  back when Methuselah and I went on that two-manner up the North Fork....   ;)

But I'd MUCH rather take ELY than a LOT of other spots....  don't even get me started...  HEEEE HEEEE   ::banghead::

Of course, in 2005, I didn't have ONE dispatch that was CORRECT...  not ONE.  It was 100% incorrect information, ALL season long....  that was a first, too.  And not a good one!   :(

As for Dan...?  Is that the guy who always called me "Hon"??   ::rofl::

 :D

I passed through Ely a few times whilst pushin' that old Diesel Truck around the country, and I even misspent a night or two there.  I thought the town was nice, but I didn't appreciate the queer that tried to pick me up in the middle of the night from out of my sleeper.   ::eek::

My current home airport is KBWC and the Platypus stays at KIPL, but that may be changing soon...    ::whistle:: ;) ;D

And speaking of ELY dispatch Mary----------------Dispatch once recalled me as I taxied out for a recon---seems one of the guys in dispatch is a private pilot (100 hrs or so) and he decided that "HE wouldn't be flying that day because of the convective activity in the area was more dangerous than what he would fly in" ::knockedout::---I went over there and had a little talk with him about what safety issues that need to be left to the PIC and that if we didn't fly with "convective activity in the area" we weren't going to fly much in Nevada!  ::complaining:

They also kept the jump ships out doing recon after recalling me several times which I found to be disconcerting ::banghead::

Other than that, they were OK |:)\

It's not a stupid question -- only about 30% of the population do f I'm remembering the figure correctly.  Me, I speak the well known local dialect of "Wenglish" but am trying to bring it up to spec with evening classes.  I can read or follow a conversation in Welsh better than I can express myself at the moment.

I see.

We rode with some Welsh people on the ski lift and it seems like it has nothing in common with English. They told us it's the oldest language in the world (which I doubt a little but I am sure it's one of the oldest languages out there). So I asked them what they do when a new word comes along like "computer" or "vending machine" or "telephone" and they said there was some council that decides what this word should be like in Welsh and then they roll with it. I found this to be very interesting since most languages just adapt the word no matter where it comes from....

Couple minutes of research indicates that the Welsh language came from Celtic origins, which in turn came from Proto-Indo-Euopean roots prior to 600 BC along with German (from which English evolved), Latin, Baltic, Slavic, and Iranian ::thinking::

Always knew about the English-German derivation but the details are fascinating----------go to bbc.co.uk for more if you're interested |:)\

In particular "The Story of Welsh" comes highly recomended.

Not quite.  The statistic quoted says that *OF THOSE WHO SPEAK WELSH* 62% are fluent.  It give 21% as the total of Welsh speakers so I was over-opimistic.

Not a lot in common, no.  More in line with Breton or old Cornish.

Well "telephone" is just "teleffon" (with a tobach ^ over the "o"), but "computer" is the tooth rattling "cyfrifiadur".   Some words are just respelled to fit in with the Welsh alphabet and phonetics (no j or z or x amongst other things) so "chocolate" is "siocled" which doesn't look similar at all but does sound quite similar.

There's some words which are whole phrases to translate in English to which tickle me.  ("Echddoe" means "the day before yesterday"...!)  Some that need a whole phrase to translate their meaning, some words translate to about a dozen meanings depending on context, the spellings of others changes depending on context, grammar and seemingly what time of the month it is, and there's over a dozen words for "yes" and "no"  And some great idioms "It's raining old ladies with sticks" where you'd talk of "raining cats and dogs" in English, and "it's no good lifting your petticoat after you've p*ssed" as a far more colourful instruction not to "cry over spilt milk"

It's a "challenging" language to learn, but lovely on the ear.

Oh, this is so neat!  I loved hearing these phrases -- language is so interesting, and it's nice of you to share this!  I always like hearing the unique phrases that are used in different parts of the U.S. when traveling...  I hope we never get completely bland and all melted together, and lose our 'own' words.  Just today I had to call a customer service help-line, and the young man had a certain sound...  I asked where he was from and he said northern Maine....  I was glad to know my ears haven't completely lost their interest, either....

I LOVE the "raining old ladies with sticks" line!!!!!  What an image!!!

Thank you...   ::bow::

Since you guys are bringing up Welsh, I have an interesting story for y'all.  My wife is actually ethnic Mari, which is a group of Finnish people that live in central Russia.  They have their own language (also called Mari) which is part of the Finno-Ugric language family, of which the main languages are Finnish, Hungarian, and Estonian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_languages

My sweetheart just mentioned today that there are only about 500,000 speakers of the Mari language worldwide.  I have only heard it spoken a few times and I would never think it is even close to Russian.  I am afraid the only phrase in Mari I have been taught is "Ya tem turatem", which means "I Love You" in English.  I just thought I'd throw that out there for everyone.

Spring is sure hurrying to arrive, here at ID68....     :)

We had a nice day today, it was the spring "Clean-Up-The-Runway" day and everyone (even one dog and one cat) turned out to pick rocks, and gather up stray items that blew in during the winter.  A few brushy trees were pulled up, and fences were checked....  it's so nice to think that summer is coming!!

The resident 172 driver got her out and made three perfect landings...  what a nice sound to hear on a warm, sunny day.

I asked if anyone here minded various airborne visitors and it was a unanimous vote -- C'MON IN and VISIT ---  so, if anyone gets overhead in this part of the world, and can use 1800 feet of dirt, please drop in!!    ::bow::

Happy Spring, everybody!!    :D

You can just send them Crownies to us via FedEx or DHL.  Hehe.   ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking::

mm... the closest airport to my house is LLIB Rosh Pina (Waipont ROP),wich is 3 miles away from my house (and there's a dhc-4 taking off right now),and the other one is LLKS Kiriyat Shmona, but it's a VFR airport, this one is 30 minutes from me,but closer to my school (15 minutes on bike),both under the control of Pluto (127.100),and if you wanna drop by,just tell me and i'll send you a message with my phone,oh yeah,it's in israel.

Closest airport is Livermore (KLVK)  which is five minutes away.  I work in KOAK.  Santa Rosa huh.  Nice brewery up there. I'll have to give you a call next time i'm up that way.

Got some fantastic Microbrew places nearby--call me anytime--for whom are you employed in OAK?  (I lived in the parking lot near the old hanger 2 when I was freight dogging) ::complaining: ::sick::
