Dreaming about flying
I like dreaming. It’s like watching weird movies. Very rarely do I have nightmares but also very rarely explicitly pleasant dreams from which I don’t want to wake up from. Most often it’s something exciting and movie-like where I’m never sure if I myself am the protagonist or if I’m watching. There’s usually some problem that I can’t seem to solve.
What’s weird is that there are a few recurring places, mostly houses and city areas that don’t exist in reality, at least not that I know of, but that keep popping up in my dreams. I also sometimes end up in Japan (where I used to live for a couple of years), or am drafted into the army again. Those dreams are clearly from a first person perspective. And just a couple of days ago, our new neighbors built a fence right through our yard! Man, was I pissed when I woke up.
Anyway, what’s funny is that (unlike Chuck) I can’t remember ever dreaming about my work. I wonder if that says something about a person and if, then what?
I’ve been out of USAF Weather Maintenance for twenty seven years now, and I still have recurring dreams of needing to do PMI’s on the runway equipment (particularly the wind birds).
I remember the most frustrating dream I had once was the night before I had a calculus (if I remember right) exam I was a bit stressed by. I had a dream of doing the exam, with all the unpleasantness that entails. My thoughts when I woke up were “Damn it! That was just a dream, I still have to do it for real! Why must I experience that more than once?!” Similarly, I don’t get paid to work in dreams, which is annoying. On the other hand, I’ve had some dreams that really make me think, especially ones relevant to what I’m going through in my life, making me wonder how I’d respond to a situation in waking, or giving me a new perspective on a situation.
Interesting, RG2Cents, as I’ve been retired from USAF Weather for 23 years, yet I still dream about the job. I knew Air Weather Service gave forecasters & observers nightmares, but I didn’t realize it gave Weather Maintenance folks them, too! 🙂

Hey, Captain Dunsel! I was stationed in Florida and saw one of the fits that waterspouts can give observers! Every 10 seconds it would touch down and then go back up into a funnel cloud forcing the observer to make a new report. It did that all the way up the coast. I can see that as being an observer’s nightmare. ^_^
When I was in the service we were under a different command than Air Weather Service, and yeah, that was the stuff of nightmares. XD
RG2Cents, I recall when Weather Maintenance was pulled from AWS — made the parties a lot smaller (Weather folks belonged to MAC, which usually made them tenants on SAC, TAC, etc. bases).
Weirdly enough, even though I was in for 20 years (74-94), with a specialty in forecasting tornadic weather, and multiple assignments to the US Midwest (i.e., “Tornado Alley”), the only place I ever saw a confirmed tornado was Southern France! Saw several funnel clouds in NY and NJ, but only that one tornado!
@Captain Dunsel Yeah, I was in from ’82 to ’90. I heard that weather maintenance went back to the same command as AWS shortly after I got out but only hearsay. Pretty ironic if true, ’cause the whole time I was in, I griped that was what they should do. The other command didn’t always seem to understand the importance of our work.
That waterspout was the only tornado I’ve ever seen, myself. Awesome phenomenon!
