Do opposites attract?

I often wonder how much truth there really is in certain sayings and proverbs. Particularly in those who have an equally valid but totally contradicting message. “Opposites attract” versus “birds of a feather flock together” are a great example of this. Or “great minds think alike” versus “fools seldom differ”, or “absence makes the hear grow fonder” versus “out of sight, out of mind.”

Well, I’m confused. How am I supposed to live a happy life and make wise decisions when the wisdoms I receive are so convoluted? It’s almost as if I would have to think for myself and make up my own mind! The horror!

While I would not disagree with you that many of our Proverbs and sayings are indeed contradictory, I will posit that the six ones you have just pointed out actually do not contradict!

Four instance, great minds can indeed think alike and fools can think alike as well just as both types of people can have five fingers on each hand. Where is the contradiction in that?

And indeed, absence does make the heart grow fonder. But that doesn’t mean that that person is going to be on your mind—especially if he’s out of sight!

And who’s going to tell me that flocking together is necessarily the same thing as attraction!?
We know they are different things—witness marriage!!!
