Money is a great eaquilizer, I think. If you do something you love for money, it makes it less fun, because it somehow desecrates the act and you have to stick to deadlines, rules and what other people tell you to do. On the other hand, if you do something you hate for money, it might make it bearable, if not even enjoyable.
And then it all depends on how much money you make. Becoming filthy rich while doing something you love would be the optimum, of course. But if that option is not available (as for 99.9% of all people), would you rather make a lot of money working a job you hate, or make enough money to get by, by doing what you love?
Well, I guess you know which option we here went for!
By the time you read this, Mike and I have already been skiing a week, hopefully with lots of snow! Right now, as I’m typing this in advance, the weather forecast doesn’t look too bad, not a lot of sun, but at least enough snow. But we ski in almost any type of weather anyway. It’s an outdoor sport, after all! Except when it’s raining, that’s the only type of weather that makes us pack our stuff and leave the mountain.
Well, I’d rather wait a week in Reno than, for example, camp outside of a store for a week for the newest iPhone. Sometimes there is no way around lining up, and sometimes it is really worth it. But I disklike lining up so much that quite often, I rather do without a product or service than to waste my precious time in a line. I guess I’m lucky I wasn’t born in a communist country a few decades ago, because with that attitude, I would probably have starved to death!
It seems people have been dancing rather erratically recently here where I live. Last week we had sunshine and 20°C so you could even sunbathe outside. The last couple of days it was snowing again, with the occasional intermezzo of sunshine. But then, it’s April, so what would you expect.
By the way, does this “April weather” phenomenon exist in other places of the world too, or is this only a European thing? Come to think of it, does it even exist in other parts of Europe too, or is it just some Austrian thing?
Spring is around the corner and we always have similar discussions around this time at my dayjob as well. Sometimes I get out of washing aircraft by pulling rank but not often.
Hearing about Sun ‘n Fun, which seemed to have neither fun nor sun was heartbreaking though. If you had your aircraft smashed, write me an email with N-number and I’ll send you a free Chicken Wings book as consolation.
Thank goodness for instrument flight! That way you don’t really have to clean your windshields anymore…
Oh yes, weather, you fickle little drama queen. I wonder if someday we’ll be able to control the weather better than today. I mean we can prevent rain for the olympic games in Beijing, we can make it rain in the desert in Dubai, we can seed or disperse clouds, prevent hail, steer hurricanes… sometimes I think all the weather whims we see today might be unintended side effects of that weather modification. Or maybe it’s just that there’s a camera everywhere to register every hailstone on the planet…
