For me as a non-native speaker, the word “taxi” was one of those words that took a bit longer to sink in. If a word has only one particular meaning in your own language, it takes some convincing that it could really have a completely different or a variety of meanings in another. I also remember distinctly that I didn’t believe that “you’re welcome” could possibly be the response to “thank you”.

Yepp, “flying english” can be quite puzzling for non-native speakers. I ran into some problems when using some aviators terms at school: My teacher knew a lot about Shakespeare, but not too much about technical english.
@ Fabo: In German you would say: “Mein Englisch ist mies” (from miserable).
