Runway ten

Thanks again to Karl Winters who came up with this strip!

On the same note, we would like to thank everybody esle who writes us with ideas! It is not very often that we can actually turn your input into a actual comic strip, for a myriad of reasons. Usually the story is just too long and needs too much setup for us to be able to turn it into a strip. Sometimes it’s because there’s profanity involved, and sometimes we’re just not creative enough. So if you ever wrote us with an idea but haven’t seen us use it, please don’t take it personally! Keep those emails coming!!

Uh, I’m only flying quadrokopters – no runway necessary. Can you expain this joke to non-aeronauts? Does the X have a special meaning perhaps, such as “wrong way”?

Sorry about that! Well, for everyone who didn’t “get it”, when they shut down a runway, they mark it with a big, yellow X, that looks something like this:
      runway closed

Just noticing that Chuck is on the right seat. I need to check how often this happens in his solo flights. Instructing himself?

  3. Ryan says:

The X means the runway is unservicable, so not in use.

On my first cross country I lined up with the runway that was marked with several X’s, mainly as a joke. Instructor didn’t see it that way and took over. They were right next to each other, I would have had lots of time to move over!

I really love this running gag: “Chuck, is that you?” By the way, thanks for the explanation, I didn´t get it in the first place!

A few months after you published this the first time, I was flying (in VMC) the brand new RNAV 13 approach at Austin Executive when the tower let me know that the runway, long under construction, was still closed. NOTAMS, anyone? I guess you can call me “Chuck”.

    Hi Folks,

I just passed my language test (level 4) yesterday. This could be an issue for your comic:
In Germany (as in all ICAO states) you have to proove your English skills by law. This has to be documented in your licence (by law). For this documentation by the authority you have to send not only the report of the examiner but a special application form! That’ the kind of wagging the dog in Germany!

flashback to Latin Lessons! I too have noticed that Chuck is often in the right seat, is that an instructor thing? or a chopper pilot thing?

    Just a quick additional information…

The closed runways have yellow X marks on them or they bring a lighted X stand and place them on the runway. Specially at night, when that runway is closed, they put up lighted X to indicate that runway is closed for takeoff and landings. It is weird because when I hear NOTAMS (Notices to Airmen (Pilots)), sometimes they mentions “Runway 12 closed for fix wing only”. Although they placed huge yellow X on the runway, helicopters can land, but not airplanes. 😉
