Stuff in clouds

Cloud storage is a great thing. When I think back even just 20 years, when 3.5″ floppy disks were the state of the art to save and transport data, it is amazing how far we’ve come. I wonder what progress we will see in the next 20 years!

when I had Computers class in High School we had to buy a 5 1/4 inch floppy, but we got lucky, they were double sided so the cheapest one (I think we paid $5) was like 360k. A half a school year’s worth of programing fit on the thing (Computers was a half year elective) but to use the opposite side we needed to notch the floppy as the drives were one sided and Apples IIe didn’t use the full 360k.

Another concept which Chuck doesn’t seem to catch…

The funny thing is that as data storage gets cheaper and bigger, the data itself gets larger. You used to be able to fit a game on 3-5 floppy disks. Now they don’t even fit on a DVD anymore.

Cloud storage sounds good, but the amount of time I would take trying to upload data (residential internet upload speeds are dial-up worthy) makes it more economical to use disks instead.

Also, I liked this comic. 😀

Actually, I prefer physical storage — mainly micro SD chips or my 360 gb and 1Tb drives. I find Cloud services to be too undependable for the money that they charge.

The first time I heard of 8″ floppy disks was when my office supply store cleaned out their storeroom in the early eighties, and left two or three thousand of them on the sidewalk. They had originally cost the retailer three or four bucks apiece wholesale.
