Opinion leaders
I wonder if mankind will ever grow out of its tribal nature. I would be willing to bet that it won’t happen in the foreseeable future. And a tribe doesn’t work when everybody’s a leader, so it only makes evolutionary sense that most people have a tendency to follow and, in a way, to behave as a flock. I’m sure it’s the same thing for chickens!
Two interesting thoughts I get from your little description. As for tribal nature, we clearly haven’t moved past that. Look at nations, how nationalistic we are, and eager to fight one another. On a smaller, more primeval level, look at how excited people get over professional sports, I’ve long thought that’s a modern outlet for tribe mentality. As for leadership, it seems like everyone, especially in university settings, always emphasizes that everyone must be a “leader,” like that’s the single most important character trait, the only way a person can matter or do good in the world. A bunch of leaders are useless unless there are other people, with other skills, to follow them and help their leadership accomplish something. I guess the leaders usually get all the glory though…

Chuck should apply that kind of positive thinking himself. Not to trick the FAA, but to become a better pilot. Wait, it seems he’s been trying for a while already, with not much success. And the comic wouldn’t be that interesting anymore, if he [i]actually[/i] managed to improve his professional skills, right? Eventually he’s going to be surpassed by Jason (he’s quite good at landings it seems), provided that the latter manages to find another instructor. Perhaps Nobu?
Yeah, Quill, I agree! It’s an interesting avenue for philosophizing, isn’t it? In fact I wrote a multi-paragraphed blog about the levels of society and where and how which kind of leadership makes sense, but I ended up deleting it, because it was incoherent and all over the place.
Being a good follower is highly underrated. With good, I don’t mean “mindless”. But I’ sure anybody who worked in a team, where everybody was paying attention, is proactive, can understand the greater goals etc. knows how much better that is than a team only made up of “leaders”!
