Which one is yours?

Oh my god, Becky! Look at that strip! It is so … old! And you probably have to be of a certain age to get that reference too.

Anyway, I thought I’d dig something old out of the archive, as we said we would do once in a while. After all, although we have some really long-time fans, many of you young whippersnappers probably haven’t seen some of our really old stuff. And by really old, I mean really old! By looking at the files, I saw that I drew this in 2003 and colored it in 2005. In fact it is the third strip ever that we came up with. Sigh! It makes me all sentimental!

I know I said this many times before, but I’m always amazed at how the drawing and the characters have changed over the years. And I’m also amazed at how long I’ve been drawing this strip already! It took about 5 years or so, and around the time of our third book, I’ve found the form that I have kept more or less the same since then, but I personally still can see a few changes and evolution going on. Although I’m not sure if it’s something people who “just read” the strips, and don’t stare at them for hours while drawing and coloring, can even see.

  1. Chuck has wilder hair in old cartoons, and a bigger nose/beak. That is about the difference I see, at first glance….

    Chuck, is that you…?

(I kid, I kid! But it was too good an opportunity to pass up.)

As a former C-5 Loadmaster, I can say that size does matter.

Comparing it to last weeks strip I’d say you lost the edge.
The new lines seem more rounded and a little less crisp/detailed.

Au contraire! I can see a significant difference, a bit like watching one of the early Simpsons episodes.

Oh, you’ve probably learned since that there aren’t that many civilian Hercules around.

  6. Sas7 says:

@Louis: IS it a civilian? Or maybe he just flies it for the Air Force… we may never know…
